bartelby Posted June 7, 2014 Posted June 7, 2014 Well the original pickup in my SB Elite finally died, the output of one half is much quieter than the other. So I after spending a while looking on the internet about replacements I decided to Frankenstein it a bit more, but this time it's reversible. I borrowed a pickup from my Dean bass: Whilst I was at it I borrowed the active preamp too Wired it all back as a single output and this thing sounds like a monster! I need to attenuate the Model One's output as it's overdriving the preamp when run full on. But mixed about 70:30 (Dean P/up : Dimarzio) it's bloody awesome. I managed to get the original Aria p/up out of it's casing, so now I'm going to see if I can find something to put in there. So it'll look a bit neater. But I think I may stick with it being active once I return the Dean parts to their donor bass Quote

Enquiring minds need to know. Don't bin the original bobbin just yet though... I'm attempting to rehabilitate the original pickup from my SB-1000. It's soaking in a jar of Dichloromethane at the moment & that seems to be softening the epoxy resin to the extent that it can be dug out with either a screwdriver tip or one of those wooden coffee stirrers. Initial results suggest that it'll be recoverable, but I'll report back either way. Pete. Quote

All the hacked in cavities have been filled, new machine heads, Armstrong pickup, switch, knobs, strap buttons and output socket. A lovely new rosewood trussed cover, a la Cliff Burton. The luthier did a nice neat job of all the hacking I did many years back. There now comes a long pause in the process while I save money for a total refinish. I'm going to have it refinished in black. And I need to find somewhere to replate the bridge. Quote

[/quote] I wouldnt bother with the replating the bridge. just polish it to death to remove whatever plating was on there and you will get back to the brass. when brass is polished properly it looks better than any gold finish I have ever seen... will post a photo of the brass bridge on my 1980 Vantage that I polished myself to give you an idea Quote

I'm pretty sure the base is die cast and the material is not brass? Perhaps have a look underneath before 'avin' a go. As I said, could be wrong. . . . Mmmm this cheese salad cob is nice!!! Quote
