4 strings too much? Try a 2 string

I can't link it as I'm on my phone but I searched 'fender sub-lime bass' on YouTube and I watched some muzikshmidt clip. The guy is using a 2 string bass. I mean not like 2 strings missing. But the neck is 2 string width and the headstock only has 2 tuning pegs. I didn't get a look see at the pickup or bridge but the rest seemed full size. Anyone else seen this?

Did you know that basses (of the "double" variety) originally only had three strings, even well into the 19th century? Most early instruments are conversions to four strings. The top soloists of the day such as Bottesini & Dragonetti would fly up and down the G-string to play their impressive arias & theme/variations, etc.

i can't remember the name of this bass, but remember somebody telling me about it months ago, that it was made as a limited run as there was a cock up and a series of necks were made / ordered of the wrong thickness!

and presidents were both guitarists, both playing guitars with 2 or 3 strings... saw them in bristol the other year, still going strong!

This is effectively all I had to work with when I broke the D string four songs into the first set a couple of weeks ago, I had no back up bass so spent the rest of the set thinking like crazy to make do without (shifting lots of things 5 frets up the neck). IT was actually alot of fun. I wonder where i can get one of those from....

Krappy Guitars in the US will make all manor of weird and wonderful basses like this for you for very little money. I've had a 2 string bass from him and it cost about $70 dollars.

Or make your own from a bit of scaffold pipe & half a P pup, plus a bolt with a hole drilled through it for a tuner:

It's called the "Kinderbasje" or "Child's Play" bass and it's made by Bas at [url="http://www.bas-extravanganza.nl/?page=home"]Bas Extravaganza[/url]. A one-off, it was made from left-over pieces from other basss that had been built. He then got his children to paint it.

When being adventurous for the majority of music shops' bass departments means having a Rockbass or two amongst the Fenders and their clones, the chances of finding anything as radical as a bass with less than 4 strings is pretty close to zero. (and actually lower than that if you you want a left-handed one - judging from your avatar)

Just order one form [url="http://www.krappyguitars.com"]Krappy Guitars[/url] and it'll be so cheap that if you don't like it you'll be able to sell on here without losing too much money.

Sandberg made a 2 string bass which I saw in an old issue of BGM or BP. Full size body I think, looked very odd. Also remeber Tony Levin's 3 string Stingray? I have been trying to find a picture of it for ages but I seem to remeber it got caught up in a house fire he had.
