Squier VMJ Fretless pickup change

Hi all,
I have just got a squier vintage modified fretless jazz and was thinking of changing the pups to
costum jazz pickups. Has anyone done this? And what were the results like? Worth the change?

I too have been contemplating this but according to what I've read so far unless you really don't like the pickups, the consensus is not to bother.

I had been thinking about a drop in preamp like an Audere or something but do I really need it?

The drop in Audere is a great preamp and i highly recommend it, i have it in my custom jazz and once you get used to it you know where to find all those usable tones very quickly.

I have Wizard 84's in my jazz and they sound great to me, maybe give andy @ wizard pickups a call and he can make custom pups for you (usually no extra charge) and all you gotta do is describe the sound you want.
