niceguyhomer
I'm thinking of putting some TI flats on my Sterling to achieve a more trad sound. Has anybody done this with theirs and was it a good move?
markytbass
I have a Stingray with Rotosound Jazz flats and it sounds sweet. I don't know if the TI's are as bright sounding as the Roto's though.
paul, the
Have a look at motown tracks on youtube. I've seen a few mms on there, hopefully with flats.
Geddys nose
I've got Flats on mine at the 'mo seems to tame the maple board down a bit and can get a near Motown sound with a bit of EQ control and its a joy not to have string noise,Well worth a try
dub_junkie
I had flats on my Sterling for a day and I couldnt get roundwound ones back on it quick enough.sorry but not for me
TheRev
Go for it. I put Roto flats on mine for my folk-rock band and it sounded perfect - removes the top end harmonics but keeps the fundamentals nice and clear. It was great for playing old soul stuff too. niceguyhomer
I've just ordered some TI flats and I'll let you know how I get on. My Sterling has a Nordstrand pup and a maple board and it's really aggressive sounding especially through my GK rig. I just want too see if I can calm it down a bit. I couldn't describe the sound as either Motown or traditional, but it was different to anything I'd produced tone-wise previously. It was perhaps a more clinical and controlled sound than I would get with the same strings on my Precisions. In fact, whereas on the Precisions I can get a close approximation to a flatwound tone by rolling off the treble on a set of roundwound strings, this was not true of flats on the Flea, which had a sound pretty much of their own.
