Constant GAS and far too many basses so another one to the For Sale section ..

Please note .... I will be away form the 25th May- 2 June ......

Just in case you ( yes you ) are thinking of giving me a large wad of cash for this stunna !! :)

Ill return all PMs on return !

Was originally a Passive BB

Thru Neck BB5000 ( thinnest neck 5 string I have ever seen let alone played ) sounds monstrous looks awesome plays Beautifully

Previously owned by Greeneking and Shockwave , see previous threads via search and see what they had to say

Will rock your 5 string world ..

Ive rewired it a couple of times ( ACG 02 and a passive Vol Vol Tone Tone ) but it sounds best ( to my ears ) with the as supplied to me 18 volt Fender system ( Vol , Pan , Bass , Mid , Treble )

Action is unbelievable sound is MASSIVE , huge PBass and J bass tones , of course spacing is tight if youre coming from wide spaced 5 but glorious when you get used to it

Dates to 1986 or thereabouts

a few dinks and a light tarnish of the hardware but all round awesomeness ..

Supplied in OHSC

Wow, didnt think you would sell this one Gary!

This is one serious bass!

Heres a terrible clip of me playing the bass, camera mic etc. Do not try and discern the tone from this video! The bass has a fantastic tone in real life! :)

Now I'm looking for the 4 string version
Mine was a light grey - but sold it in '89 or '90. Years later picked up a white fretless version - which I still have. If this one had the original tone circuit I'd be having it!

4-string version - that'll be the BB3000.
That is one lovely bass, shame it's not a BB5000A or I'd have bitten your arm off - I've been looking for one of those since about 1989!

Good luck with the sale though
Well - v8bass mentioned that the bass was originally a Passive BB, and he's added a preamp - so it would be VERY close to the BB5000A that you've been searching for. (The only difference between the BB5000 and the BB5000A is the active circuitry - which he has added).
I had this but white, made in taiwan, and both tone and action were unbelievable, there's no other word to describe this bass.

Now I'm looking for the 4 string version
There were 3 different versions of the BB5000. The first two versions were neck thru, made in japan and with a smaller type bridge. This is the version that V8 is selling.

I havent played the tiawanese ones so i cant comment, I believe they have a gert massive bridge.

These early BB serie yamahas are amazing.
I've got the bolt-on 4 string version (BB1600) and the sound, finish and playability is second to none.
From what I've read, the BB5000 neck is basically a BB3000 4 string neck, which explains the tight string spacing.
Highly recommended!

Didn't the BB3000 feature a 39.5mm nut width - whereas the BB5000 featured a 44 mm nut width? Wasn't the neck for the BB5000 derived from the neck featured on the likes of the BB1200 and BB2000 models?

I sold this bass because at the time I couldn't get on with 5 strings and the spacing was narrow.

The irony is that my present bass (I'm playing but one bass, down from owning over twenty) is a Status 5 with 15mm spacing

I wish I still had it :)

Great bass.

Thanks for some great history on this guys and obviously generates lots of interest ..begs the question why do we move it on ! ?

Is there a keeper bass out there ? ..... i wonder

If it was original it would pull bigger money but for buttons you get it all here . I will be genwinely miserable when it goes but Ill find a good way of filling the space :)

Just hit the scales and weighs in at either 10lbs or 10lbs and a penny over in old sweeties terms

nut width is indeed 44mm and spacing is at 15 mm at the bridge

Oh and yes its Made In Japan although Yamaha s dating checker doesnt list and 86 is about right

Better pics will follow shortly

The BB2000 and BB3000 have a 44mm nut. The BB5000 has the same neck dimensions as the BB3000.

You're thinking of the BB3000s, which has a jazz type neck.

I believe the BB5000A had different Alnico pickups, or at least the ones I've seen did, plus a slightly different bridge. I'm a bit of a sucker for "all original" basses too...

Well, specifically, I'm thinking about the two BB3000 examples I own. Both made in Japan - one with serial 125659, dating to late '83, and the other 129881, to early '84. Both feature two pots and a pickup selector toggle, unlike the BB3000S with its three pots. And both have 39.5mm nut widths.

Interesting, both my BB3000 basses are about 1.75" (as are my pair of BB2000 basses and the BB1200 and BB1200s I used to have). I've only ever seen the narrow necks on BB3000s basses. It was certainly introduced with a wide nut and is still produced with a wide nut today.

Can I ask how you dated them with the serial numbers? I've never been able to find an accurate reference to date some of my basses. The online Yamaha one doesn't seem to be too accurate, since it tells me I was playing a bass 2 years before it was manufactured.

Are your basses stamped made in Japan?

I had the same problem with that other site. I have a BB3000s, but it said that the serial number was "invalid" - now I KNOW that this bass is a BB3000s, and it's made in Japan (stamped next to the serial number) so the serial number has GOT to be real!
