Up for sale is my beloved Hofner 185E/2 it just doesn't suit anything I'm doing and ideally I'd like to pickup another Overwater I think, that or pay a Credit Card off :)

It was recently setup by Ged Green and has a super low action, currently strung with custom 50-110 Overwater flats.

Here is a soundclip

WITHDRAWN

It's in great condition for it's age but there are lots of cracks in the finish but I believe this is to be expected with how they finished the basses back in the day.
Is this the one Happy Jack sold here last year?

It's pretty, I'm wondering if the lack of intonation adjustment would drive me nuts eventually though.

Oh and what's the scale length on these?
Yes it is.

it's actually very in tune for what it has as a bridge

It's 30 inch scale.

Steve is under-selling this bass!

I wouldn't describe the finish as "cracked", rather it's got that "crazed" surface effect you sometimes get on 60's instruments. If you rub your fingertips over the surface, it feels very smooth.

Here are my own photos of this bass from a couple of years ago:

The colour is a gorgeous off-white --> ivory --> nearly yellow. The rosewood fretboard has strip markers made of celluloid.

A Hofner 185 usually weighs about 7.5 lbs, so it's a seriously light bass for a solid-body. The scale length is normally given as 30.5". Had this been a UK import by Selmer, it would have been described as a Hofner Artist.

There are two on/off switches for the pickups (the small white sliders) and then it's either V/V/T/T or V/T/V/T - can't remember.

The 185 was designed when flats were the only strings around, and they give it a fabulous thuddy tone. It's ideal for 60's pop and for reggae, but it's a versatile instrument. Strung with flats, of course, the limited intonation is of much less concern, but even when I had rounds on it I never noticed much of a problem with tuning.

Given what Mustangs and even Musicmasters are fetching these days, a Hofner 185 makes a very sensible alternative.

The first bass I ever had, albeit in red. And it had the checking on it, too, on the neck and parts of the body. The Selmer case had red velvet lining and the beautiful smell that came outta that case when you opened it. I ran it with Trubass strings for years and eventually punted it to a hock-shop as a skint teen and it disappeared.

HAve a bump for the memory.

Apparently if a woman can put up with me for 6 years this is the prize she wins or looses depending on your perspective.

I'm still looking for the strap button for you, but we decorate and then she tidied so I have no idea where anything is.
Why don't you just give her the bass instead of a ring? Then she'd know you was serious!
Oddly she said "I don't think it's fair how women get the diamond ring and men get nothing", GT200 please :)
