I'll bet the weather up there, is not as warm as down here and down here it's freezing! Hope you and Noel get on well together - he has a VERY wide taste in music so you'll be up to all sorts of things that you I never did. All the best. Dad! cocco
Mine has been having a thrashing at practice recently. I love the warmth and thickness it has. The pickups are so loud in humbucker mode too. Tuning stays perfect in standard, drop D or drop C. It really is a lovely bit of engineering. I just wish it had a chamfer for my left arm. If you had played a Ric for any length of time, you would think your Forty was as soft as that tissue that Labrador puppies like! The later ones are more rounded but I have to say that I've never had any comfort issues with my earlier ones. How about 10 minutes with this. No - Don't do it!!
cocco
Yeah I meant right. Lol. Nooooo I'd never take a plane to it. I'm tempted to do the 'cut the red wire' mod so that the pickups are buckers all the time though. I took the 800 grit to the back of the neck a while ago. That made it loads nicer to play. It's a 1980 (31 years old) "Toaster", with original case and by the look of it, very nice. I can see a price, how much is it? Cheers. As I said, I have one you can borrow, which I will try and dig out today. Do you want that one or are you able to sort it at your end? Cheers. Jerry_B
Tom, it's easy enough to order a truss rod key from Peavey. I got one from them last year and they were very helpful.

Is he wrong?
Hi. Not an 83! 83 Serial numbers run from 0130xxx to 0169xxx If it was an 83, it would have Blade Pick-ups and later on, "Bat" type switches. Like this. £475!!!!!!!! I have just sold the one at the bottom of the pic, to France - delivered, for less than that! Nice bass - perhaps they are VERY rare round your way! If you want one, let me know - I am finally selling some of them off. Cheers.
nollaig
I'm having a good time with that '83 I got off Eric but I'm trying to find a decent amp that'll do it justice, I'm thinking a standard Ampeg or a Crown PA - a GK is too pricey. I also considered a Peavey but I'm not sure of the best option. I just need a meatier signal into the preamp for a decent growl. My Traynor PA head is screwed. Maybe it's time to go back to H&H after all these years... I'm happy enough with the weight of the T40 too - it was a bit of an adjustment though I think my general posture is getting better now thanks to constant tensing of back muscles - T(herapeutic)40! jacethebass
Hi all First of all, I think the T-40 is one of the best looking basses ever, so much so I want to buy one soonish. I was just wondering if anyone could give me an insight into how they sound, hows the neck, weight and any other general info. Also maybe if you could recommend and alternative to it, I'm looking for an older bass something from the 70s or 80s that has a bit of mojo and pizzazz about it and not your normal jazz or precision. Thanks chaps
FlatEric
Hi all First of all, I think the T-40 is one of the best looking basses ever. . . . .
I couldn't agree more. I have quite a few of these, earlier Toaster and later Blade. Toaster & Blade There are all sorts of sounds you can get out of them and there are several fans on here. The earlier Toaster pick-up has a warmer sound with both single coil and humbucker available. Natural Toaster The Blade version is more powerful, with a slightly brighter sound - the later ones having larger switches. Blade T-40 Old Red Chalky The necks are fairly broad but not too deep - I have small hands and I have no trouble at all. They were built so you could take them into battle with you. Somewhere in this thread, if you go back a while - I weighed all the components on one of mine. I do have one really heavy one, the most powerful one I have but the rest I have no problem with - I am used to some weighty basses. As it balances so nicely, it is not as bad as people think it is - there are owners on here that use them on a regular bassis Have a read through this thread and look under gear porn Peavey T-40, started by kingforaday and you'll find lots of info and opinions. Cheers.

vicar
Hi all. I have a renewed interest in the T-40 thanks to posts and pics by Flat Eric. My name is Kirk Matthews and I was the founder member and bass player in the 1970's Punk Rock band "The Vicars" based on Canvey Island, Essex, England. I started off playing with a "Shaftesbury" Rick' copy, then had a Fender Precision and finshed up with the T-40. Sold it when I finished my playing days and went into management. How I regret that now!! http://www.myspace.com/vicarsthe 3 songs on the myspace site were recorded using the T-40. "Im Going Mad" (NOT the Alf version) "Simple Minded" and "Come Back" I was 19 years old and they were recorded in 1980. The bass can be seen in action here............. Scroll down to see my new bitch........... Edited August 11, 2011 by vicar

Sold it back to the shop where I bought it from for the usual derisory amount they offer. Regret it now but seemed the right thing to do at the time. FlatEric
Project T-40 If anyone is interested in the Peavey T-40, you may wish to have a look here. Project T-40. TO Infinity & Beyond! I have had one of the later Blade type - natural - with a rear rosewood board, languishing in a corner for some time and thought it would make an ideal test bed for some of the things that I have thought of doing. Without going into any great detail here, it would be mainly a re-finish of some sort and various electrial mods. If you have a read, you will see why. Cheers. Jerry_B
Nice! Eric, can you explain the bit where it says As Chip Todd advocates cutting the red wire, to let the pick-ups show their true light as a Humbucker, I shall include this feature? How does that work?
