Fancying some new strings I decided to take a ride out to Bass Direct in Warwick.
Wow! It's an aladdin's cave of drool-worthy, GAS inducing bass heaven. It's also run by really nice guy, we had a good old natter about gear, bands, gigging, not gigging and, oh, lots of stuff :)
I bought some DR Fatbeams and some Dunlop strap locks, hardly a fortunes worth of kit, yet I felt that my business was really appreciated. In fact, it was one of the most positive music shop experiences I've had.

So, three cheers for the good guys.

What suprised me was that, while the place is full of high end gear, the prices didn't seem crazy; expensive yeah, but not crazy expensive.

(Goddamit when is this credit card going to be cleared??! :) )

I love BassDirect. Reminds me of the good old guitar shops of my youth. You only have to look at the other threads on here to see how wrong most / many other guitar shops get it, but Mark's at the other extreme. You can go in, try any of the lovely basses or amps on show, and speak to someone who is clearly passionate about what he does.

Oh, and dangerously, he's introduces a 12 month interest free credit scheme.... Oh dear.

I've had 2 buying experiences with Bass Direct.
The first one I went in to buy a strap and strap locks. Mark was busy doing paperwork and told me to give him a shout if I needed him. I found this great as I hate been watched all the time like in other stores. I spent about 15 minutes open mouthed in awe of the stock.
Totally forgot I was after a strap and started looking at compressor pedals! Fortunately, for my bank account, there were straps right next to the EBS pedals. I had a nice chat with Mark and walked out with Dunlop strap locks and a Mono strap.

The second was an online purchase of a PolyTune. After waiting a week for the delivery I gave Mark a call he was totally honest and said he had no idea why he hadn't sent it out, it must have just slipped his mind. I have no problem with mistakes when people are up front about it.
The pedal arrived the next morning.

I'll use Bass Direct as often as I can from now on. It's just unfortunate that 90% of the stock is way out of my price range...

My first experience of BD was when we paid it a 'quick' visit when we were holidaying in the Cotswolds after we'd been to Warwick. I left my wife and our two friends in the car outside and said I'd be quarter of an hour or so. An hour later I came out having fallen in love with a Roscoe LG3000. I spent a couple of days more on holiday trying to convince myself that I talk myself out of buying it before we went back to pick it up.

He's great guy to deal with, Mark. You never feel pressured and when he suggested I try the Roscoe it felt more like he was introducing me to someone he thought I might get on with than sell me a bass! He really knows his stuff. When I took my Rebelhead back recently because some of the buttons had started to crack he was as genuinely bemused as I was and was straight on the phone to TC to report the fault, before he swapped it for a new, boxed unit - no third degree, just a genuine interest in the problem and a strong desire to sort it. As a customer I think he gets it spot on - I feel valued without feeling fawned over. Which means I'll be shopping at Bass Direct for years to come!
