OutToPlayJazz Posted May 30, 2010 Posted May 30, 2010 I love everything about that bass apart from the Kermit green paint job, which is utterly hideous I'd like to try one, but any colour apart from that green. I'd be sick within ten paces of it, LOL! Quote
Chris Horton Posted June 1, 2010 Posted June 1, 2010 I have never played one but would love to try one out. I love the style / look and even the Kermitt green colour Quote
Kev Posted June 1, 2010 Posted June 1, 2010 Briefly played one at Bass Direct a couple of weeks ago, its quite amazing how i could pick up the bass and play without looking with those frets. Pretty nice bass, does anyone know if Dingwall have a patent on that fret system? Quote
velvetkevorkian Posted June 1, 2010 Posted June 1, 2010 No. They're listed as using the "Novax fanned fret system"- Novax do/did (not sure if its still valid) have a patent on a method of laying out the frets IIRC but fanned fret instruments have been around for quite a long time. Quote

Interesingly Sei offer a fanned fret option and I know somewhere around here there's a Shuker fanned fretted bass build being documented. Looks like Novax do license the fanned fret concept, see http://www.novaxguitars.com/licensing.html EDIT: Here's the Shuker thread - really nice looking single cut http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=31247, oh and here's a fanned fret Sei http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=31247 Sorry I'll stop the information overload now Edited June 1, 2010 by purpleblob Quote

velvetkevorkian Posted June 1, 2010 Posted June 1, 2010 (edited) The Novax patent (here) only covers one method of laying out the frets, using lines coming from a single point. There are simpler ways of doing it (mark the fretspaces on the longest and shortest strings then join them), while the concept of fanned frets per se has been around since the Renaissance (link). Wow, that was some serious procrastination when I have lots of things needing doing that are actually important Edited June 1, 2010 by velvetkevorkian Quote

velvetkevorkian Posted June 1, 2010 Posted June 1, 2010 Ha- it took me a while to find it, as I thought it had expired but thought it took a lot longer than that! Quote
