ashevans09
So there I was, happily jamming away on my 'ray to some CD's and the part of the nut roughly in line with my E string snaps off. What the hell just happened? I've babied it since I got it (from Presoulnation - awesome dude) and kept very good care of it, and now I can't use my E string... Is it something I've done (so I can ensure it doesn't happen again) or do these things just happen? I'm pretty gutted at the moment to be honest, I know it can be fixed easily but still...I like keeping my basses nice and healthy y'know? any help appreciated
DanOwens
TWICE I've put a new set of strings on and busted the nut, but I've never had it mid-rippage. If you're annoyed now, just don't think of the next seven days without your bass while your luthier fixes it, or longer if you don't have a go-to tech guy. Its poo, but at least its not fallen from a wall hanger onto your multigym, snapping the neck and killing your gran in the process!!!! Dread Bass
That sucks. It is something that can just happen i guess. the nut is under a lot of pressure and it can break. It is better to think of this as an upgrade get a nice brass one and it wont break again i(n theory) and it may even improve the sound of your bass. beerdragon
I broke mine recently. it broke off at the G string due to me putting a higher guage of string on. i got another from here and stuck it on myself. decided to take off and put it on the bass http://stores.ebay.co.uk/Jackdaw-and-Swan_...0QQftidZ2QQtZkm
Jean-Luc Pickguard
If its a clean break a tiny dot of superglue *may* fix it back in place with no ill effects

Guest MoJo
Did exactly the same thing myself while fitting a .110" string into a nut that was obviously only meant for a string no bigger than a .105". The nut cracked at the thinnest point at the bottom of the string slot and the end flew off. Won't make the same mistake in a hurry. Mr. Foxen
I decided to change the nut on my generic P clone, its was some soft stuff that my detuner sawed through. Also too soft to shear out by bashing the end, endedd up pulling with pliers and took a chunk out of my fingerboard too. Balls. Clamped and glued now. This thread is a reminder to take my time filing the graphtech one.

Ouch.
Dr.Dave
Glue it , sellotape it , make it work somehow - while you get a new one sorted. In fact , while you get a new two sorted. If you can carry a spare of something - do so.
