Old Guitar Amp

Hi.

My mate has found what appears to be and old Selmer Thunderbird 50 Mkii lurking in the corner of a studio he has recently become responsible for sorting out. It's pretty tatty and doesn't turn on but he had the sense to put it to one side. A bit of research suggests it is worth a bit so I think he is planning to sell it to fund some improvements (the studio is part of a local community project). Was wondering how best to go about getting it to the right kind of person for the right price.

Unless it's working it's not really worth much money, well to the lay person

No ones going to touch that until they know the transformers and speakers won't need replacing or haven't been replaced in the past.

I'm not sure of techs in Bath but I know a fantastic one in the Manchester area if you are ever up this way.

Or the rather older combo?

Many years ago I was in a band with a guitarist and that combo - it was absolutely cracking, especially great tremolo.

There is an amp tech working from PMT as it now is, formerly Reverb, formerly Sound Control, in Bristol, get him to give it a once over and you should be good to go. I know a dude travels between Bath and Bristol fairly often and likes touching old valve amps, so might even get a ride for it to here, as I'm not up to much and not far from the shop. In fact, that dude is a studio engineer, if you are looking for one.

+100 - wish I still had it - mine was the Thunderbird 30, and I have read there wasn't a lot of difference/extra volume/extra headroom with the 50.

Cracking amp though.

Ah, now you mention it, my guitarist had the 30 watt version too - very loud.

Anthony at Maccaris on Denmark St - old established shop - was on Charing X Rd for years, seems a decent bloke, well into his vintage amps. Also on Denmark St, Wunjo - they like unusual stuff, and have dealt with them a couple of times - good prices and no hassle. Alternatively, the guys in the Guitarist office in Bath may be able to help?
