Buying online

Hi all

Is it a good or bad idea buying a bass online?

Is it best to snap up a bass cheaper online or buy it from your local guitar dealer?
Also I prefer basses that are brand new and never been played by every gezzer and their granny :)

Do online stores such as GAK and Thomann sell basses that are brand new.

Lastly can you recommend any reputable online dealers.

Thanks

Deaky

As long as you are sure of what it is you want then buying on-line is a great idea. It does help ifyou have a wee bit of an idea about set ups as it may need tweeking when it arrives but if these two issues are sorted then go for it.

A lot (if not all ) of basses in you local shop will have had sweaty 'erberts playing with it unless you insist on a brand new one from the stock room if indeed they have one.

GAK, Dolphin, Thomann, absolute music, and bass direct all sell absolute brand newbies as they sell direct from stock, I would recommend all of them.

It really depends on a numer of factors, first of all what are buying online, brand new or second hand? With brand new from a reputable dealer, you should have the certainty of after sale support in case of a dodgy bass out of the box, with second hand the risk is higher as most of these are on sale or return and don't belong to the store, they wouldn't know the history of it.
The other thing is, even if you buy brand new and the bass comes out of the box set up by a Maplin sales assistant with a degree in acne, spots and porn magazines, you can always have them set up to your requirements. If you are not confident on setting up your own basses it might be an issue to you. But the reason why you decided to buy online it's obviosuly because of the more competitive price and the fact that you get it delivered to your door. That savings should compensate any set up fee.

If you buy in UK you can at least be sure that you are entitled to your money back if you are not satisified. Of course this is true only if you buy from a reputable store with secure online merchant protection and for god sake always buy with your credit card because you must remember these 2 legal loop holes: 1) a debit card does not cover you for dodgy sales only a credit card do and remember a credit card will not cover you for amounts below £100 so if you spend £99 on a dog, that'll stay your dog.

Good luck :)
