Pity that, 'cos I really enjoyed the rest of the show!

Whether or not you agree with him being the best bassist, the truth is that not many bassists are well known by non-musos, so of course the few that are are going to be head and shoulders ahead of the rest in votes.

IMO Flea's a good bassist, but the best? Probably not.

As much as I'm not really a big fan of Flea's,when you compare him to the rest of
the players that were short listed,I think it's a pretty fair result.

The programme and whole series were dire. I don't expect them to make a specialist programme of interest only to musos, but I do think they could have made an interesting and informative series, aimed at Joe public which actually explained each instrument's role in a rock band. The "Other ones" show, for example just reinforced stereotypes and general lack of knowledge about bass, when it could have made people think differently about our intrument and what it does without getting too nerdy.

I missed the program - who were the others shortlisted?

We're bass players... we don't warrant a shortlist! It was just taken from the online voting.

I thought the programs leading up to the final one were pretty good, but last night was awful - apart from Radcliffe and Copeland; and that had to be the least sounding tribute act to LZ I've ever heard! And what the hell was the 'Beat Box Boy' all about!?!

Could not see the point of the program at all, especially a 2 hour program to announce 4 results...... I can't wait for J.R to retire/go off air.

Flea is an OK choice - he is very talented with an incredible stage presence, so no real complaints there.

I would agree with Flea, although it's not as clear-cut as the other categories which were all no-brainers IMO.

Glad Peter Hook didn't get it - his playing makes my skin crawl.

Once again it needs to be said playing a musical instrument is not a competition. There is no best...

Having said that it could however be argued that Peter Hook is a more interesting musician that some of the others since he uses the instrument in a less conventional way. Still doesn't make him better or worse than any other bassist.

It was / is meant to be an "Oh no!! Not the Bass Players neglected by the BBC thread again" actually but I guess it can go that way too

That was kind of my point. They never said so you had to go online

This was TV creating a program and filling 2 hours of air time at virtually no cost. Don't blame JR, he was just hired to front it. blame the producers.

Superbly put. Stewart Copeland was making some good points. I'd always champion Charlie Watts over Keith Moon but I think generally the public like flash and showmanship over steadiness and solidness. It all comes down to taste. I remember kids at school debating for hours over whether Clapton, Hendrix or Knopfler was the best guitarist and the reality was most of the kids at school didn't know what a chord was. Ultimately it all comes to taste... but there is nothing really wrong with that, debating is the fun part.

plus the one. life really is too short for it....

For a Rock and Roll band Flea is a worthy winner. Can't think of the likes of Jaco, MK or the plethora of technically better bassists fitting in with the rock and roll mentality
