discreet
I believe you can do this in Audacity: http://audacity.sourceforge.net/ Edit: May be useful: Edited June 8, 2010 by discreet

geoffbyrne
Windows Media Player has been able to play at half speed since (at least) XP. G.
ikay
'Transcribe' from Seventh String (http://www.seventhstring.com/) is designed for musicians and allows you to do all of this. You can change tempo without changing pitch or shift songs to different keys etc. Very useful bit of software
OldGit
Windows Media Player It's free, it's on all Windows computers. Load your MP3, play it in Windows Media Player Right click on the dark grey bit at the bottom and a contextual menu pops up, choose play and speed. (or via the play menu at the top if it's visible) Bingo ... half speed basslines at the correct pitch. NB: It doesn't work if you just play the track from a CD. You have to rip it as an MP3 first. WMP will do that for you too.

Higgie
I use a program called the Amazing Slow Downer. You can slow down recordings keeping the same pitch, you can alter the pitch via semitones or +/- cents for those recordings which are just a few hz out, you can EQ it to try and remove vocals, or bass, or isolate the bass, loop segments over and over to work it out, etc. Really useful program. You get asked to learn a song in a different key? You just load it up, change the pitch up or down by however many semitones you need, and away you go

El Bajo
+1 for Amazing Slow Downer. Even the demo version is decent. It will play the first few songs of a CD or the first 3 minutes of a song. Buying the full version is'nt to expensive either (less than £50 I think) but the demo is good enough for me.

Very easy to use, selecting or removing the bass from a song makes it great for working out a bass line, and then playing along with the record also... Try the demo! Happy Jack
Thats the one. One of the best programs I've ever "bought".
Another +1 from me. I've been using this for for several years. My only gripe would be that it likes to save stuff as WAV files, where I'd prefer mp3. I use The ASD to speed up & slow down, alter the pitch, and also to save Lo-Bass versions of anything I want to play along with, including recordings of my own band. BassMunkee
Audacity will do it, and so will Reaper.
