The ones that got away (ha - fixed the title)

Twice in my life I've seen some bass gear that I should have bought but for some reason didn't and lived to regret it:

The first was a 1970's Fender Musicmaster in black for £250 (this was about 1995)

The second was a Squier JV series precision in black with tortie plate going for £120 in Cash Converters in Sheffield back in 2000. I still can't believe I didn't get it!

Any of you been as daft or just didn't have the means at the time?

I sold, what I thought was a crappy old cheap bass for £70 in order to buy a drum kit. I think it said Fender Musicmaster on it though. Can anyone link me to some pics so I know if I have a new regret or not? It was a white short scale thing.

I regret not buying a washburn 6 string I saw on ebay once, but I couldn't really afford it, so, no big deal.

i don't think they're massively valuable - £400/£500 maybe?

I should have bought a G&L Asat guitar in Boston at new year but I wanted a tele custom more (and still do).
But it was only the equivalent of £350 and was mint - should have had it.

That's a guitar though!

Well, never mind. Maybe I can get her to sell it me back for £70. I really liked it but needed the money at the time, and I only play 6 strings in the band.

I had the chance of a Hofner violin bass for £75 but I didn't buy it.

Mind you, this was about 25 years ago, the Beatles obsession hadn't started up yet, and it was an absolute bag of sh*te to play, and I was looking for a bass to play on. Respect to Lord Sir King Paul for the fact he actually managed to play complete gigs with one.

I do miss my old Precision a bit. It wasn't a patch on the Warwick which I chopped it in for but it was the second best Precision I've played.

PS. is the surplus apostrophe in the thread title just to annoy people like paul, the and me?

ap'strophe police? :)

I'm lucky in that I haven't had too many moments of regret over gear.

Wish I'd had the money in 1987 to buy an early Musicman Cutlass 1 - one without the Cutlass "1" on the headstock logo. Very unusual - asking price was NZ$2399 even back then though.

I had the opportunity to buy a Jaydee Supernatural Mark King in white, #0026 in 1989 once but turned it down because it was worn out and the guy selling it sounded like he needed a fix.

I missed out on a couple of ebay auctions where stuff went for a song but I didn't bid because I couldn't justify spending the money on something I didn't really need.

When I was looking for a bass to start with two years ago, I found an Ibanez Jazz bass copy in a second hand store for 100 pounds. It was a beautiful bass, black with white pickguard, maple board with black blocks - exactly like this one. I tried it and the strings were buzzing because the neck had a slight backbow so I didn´t buy it. Would have been an easy fix but I didn´t have a clue at the time... :)

Nowadays these are selling for 300 or 400 pounds on eBay...

Swapped an Ibanez Artist 6 string solid body (guitar - kind of SG shape) for an acoustic once - made sense at the time but I have long wished I hadn't (still have the acoustic but never play it)! :)

Was going to buy a Goodfellow bass from A1 Music in Manchester about 15-20 years ago. Fell in love with it, and was around £600 at the time.

Never bought it.

Saw them on the same stand as EBS at the Bass Day and it made me regret it. Still think they're beautiful basses. If only I'd joined the club!

I swear that wasn't there when I posted the thread - that really bugs me now - can titles be edited?

probably a few more than this if I sat down and thought about it but, thinking back, I should have bought a Fender Musicmaster 15 years ago for £75.. and about 8 years ago, I should have bought a beautiful Musicman Sabre for £600..

About 15 years ago I traded-in a Wal Custom with full flightcase for about £500 at Sound Control against a Warwick Stage II bass.
Wish I'd held on to it purely for monetary value as being honest the Wal was heavy, cumbersome and I couldn't get a tone out of it I liked, each to their own I guess. The Warwick was amazing, an '88 and really beautifully made.

Do any of you guys ever think about what inflation has done to your cash when making these comparisons?

Every now and again I think of a Bogart graphite bass I tried in the gallery years ago - the price now seems like a steal but if you factor in inflation (especially the RPI figure not Gordon's 2% odd bullshit) then you realise that it was a lot of cash!

A new Gibson Les Paul Black Beauty for $450 in 1994. I decided I was going to be a bassist instead and picked up a MIM Fender Jazz. Still got the Jazz and find uses for it but that Gibson was a bargain.

Things I shall forever kick myself for not buying a few years back (well, quite a few):

Pre-EB Stingray, £250 (long time ago, but even so, bloody hell!!)

SWR Stereo 800 power amp, also £250
Also:

'70 Dodge Challenger needing miniscule body repair, £800

My mate's Mk1 Escort Mexico, £400 (he badly needed money and didn't tell me he was selling it! pillock)
