The weight issue for the pre EB's does keep coming up and was the main reason maybe even more than sound (as long as it was as good as any other normal stingray)that I went to try mine before doing a deal.As it turned out its possibly a shade lighter than my EB which is 9lbs,perfectamondo! And anyway some of them fenders are tipping in at some serious weights I saw one 14.5 lbs?! "Who ate all the pies?"

Theres a question then ,who has the heaviest bass around here and how do they find it,A mate said its ok with a wide strap but a gig with 2 and half bags of sugar round my neck on top of either of my Rays sounds like hard work to me.
This is my pre :)
nice - not seen a natural pre EB with a white scratch plate

another note re preEB Rays......there were bad ones too - a mate of mine has a dreadful '77 that is virtually unusable due to electrics; but i stick to my guns a good preEB is the nuts!

another note re preEBs - mine was my main bass from '83 to '09......now I have to go to a chyropractor regualrly for back and neck problems; but whoever said art didn't require a bit of pain and sacrfice

Thanks bassnut,They probably do look better with black but its original and different IMO.A few basschatters have had the pleasure of this one in the flesh and one in particular came with me to get it.He is not a massive ray fan but even he was like "get it dude!" The general feeling on the electronics on the eb forum and even the musicman geek site is that the last evolution is more reliable, battery disconnects when unplugged and a smoother more pleasing tone from the electrolytic caps rather than the tantalum ones of the earlier epoxy ones,That said I would still like a '77 in black or root beer as long as everything worked proper and it was no more than 9.5lbs. (still the same preamp in the new 2 bands too but different pup and less wood around it)
This I couldn't agree more with, overpriced, terrible stock and inexperienced/poorly informed staff as well (despite knowing two members of staff that have previously worked there, who couldn't stand the job anyway). I only ever pop in every few months to see if they've cleaned up their act. Dawsons is very much the same. Curlys across the road provides a nice service but don't provide a good level of professional gear, although this is just my opinion.
Completely disagree - of the 3 main music shops in Liverpool I've found Dolphin to be miles ahead of the other two in terms of customer service. Granted they don't have a great bass section but I've always found the staff in Dawsons to be incompetent and Curly's to be arrogant whereas in Dolphin they are always really helpful. You never pay the price on the ticket either if you ask them how much they can do the goods for.
Curly has improved of late in terms of the gear they are now stocking.
I was trying a dirt pedal out in Dolphin Liverpool this afternoon and used a Stingray as it was about the nearest I could get to my bass (hot actives). It was a 4 string, all
wood body maple? - I think it was going for between £1600 - £1700. God it was nice to play - and sounded totally awesome too. I didn't like the pedal and ended up playing the bass clean for half an hour. It made me really, really want it. I could see the 0% finance offer but the inevitable reality check fought off the urge.

I'm seriously happy with the bass I have - just wish I had tonnes of money so I could buy more. Sweet, sweet bass!
0 % Finance - Buy it now before the budget !!!

This is fair enough. I actually find all three to be questionably priced and stocked, I'm a guitar player as well and find this to be the case. I remember a while back Curly's had a beautiful second hand late 80's Stingray for sale with a nice birdseye maple neck for a steal, the guy let me play it basically all day, it was one of the best Rays I've ever heard. But I hear differing opinions all the time from the stores in Liverpool. I personally now don't shop at any of them really.

How opinions can differ eh? They must be having a bad day whenever I go in there. Last time I went in I asked for a short speakon cable, (they didn't have any speakon cables), and a Tascam bass trainer. The guy behind the counter screwed his face up with incredulance and said, "Tascam bass trainer?... I've never even heard of it", which is fair enough, but the high pitched inflection in his voice gave away his annoyance that I should ask for such a device. Across at Dawsons I asked for the same thing, and the salesman said he only had the guitar trainer in stock but would order one for me if I wished... altogether a better experience.

Time before that i went to Dolphin looking for a 5 string. I told the chap I played a Jazz bass so preferred something with narrower string spacing. He told me to, "look mate, all 5 strings have got wider necks because, well they've got 5 strings!" I politely told him, "I'm not being funny but there's two 5 string basses hanging there next to each other, and you can clearly see one has wider spacing than the other", to which he mumbled something and told me to go ahead and try it before walking away. Dawsons on the other hand didn't stock one single 5'er... not one.

I've bought an amp from Curlys before and they can be a little abrupt and the stock underwhelming. They also once attempted to sell me a bottom of the range 10ft Planet Waves cable for £25.99. :)

tl;dr? All three stores in Liverpool have their problems, but Dolphins price tags are so wildly optimistic, (I know you're supposed to haggle but their starting price is too high), it's given me another good reason for me to give the place a wide berth.

All just my personal opinion of course.
