niceguyhomer
I've just put the old pots back into my Lakland DJ and bugger me I can't get the control knobs back on - even using quite a bit of force. Is it possible they've shrivelled up with age or do you think it's possible they're the wrong knobs. The Gallery fitted the J-Retro I just took out so I'd be surprised if they belong to another bass. Is it time to get the Vaseline out or a hammer? Shall I warm 'em up a bit in the oven? Edited December 2, 2007 by niceguyhomer

Worried about this cut and paste though from your post: "..and bugger me..knobs.. using..force..shrivelled up with age..they're the wrong knobs..time to get the Vaseline out.." I know you like your DJ4, but that's going a bit too far
BB2000
If it's tight a bit of vaseline on the knob can certainly help Seriously though - don't force them, it sounds as if they could be the wrong ones.
niceguyhomer
I'm convinced they're the wrong knobs and that maybe the Gallery have made a mistake. I'm going to call them later and see if they still have the right ones from February (long shot or what?)
BOD2
Are they push-fit knobs or do they have a small grub screw to keep them on (this would be a samll screw inset at the side of the knob). If there's a grub screw then you'd have to undo the screw enough to get the knonb on then tigthen it up afterwards.
niceguyhomer
There is indeed a grub screw and yes, they are all fully unscrewed but thanks.
Dr.Dave
No way I'm using this opportunity to make a cheap knob gag - it's beneath me!!! Do you get new pots with a J retro? Might be that. I took the nasty placcy ones off my status and replaced them with black metal jobs which was a pain. I ended up shaving bits of plastic off the pot spindles to make them fit. Not a brill job as the grub screw pulls them a bit wonky when it's tightened. You could try that and hope it doesn't go to cock. Cock. Aaagggh bugger - I was so close to a knob gag free post! Mr. Foxen
Are they split or solid shafts? You can squeeze the split in a bit often, just done that on an Eros LP copy I was restoring.
niceguyhomer
They are solid shafts where my knobs go - not split ones . Dave - you do get new pots with a J-retro and new double thingy stacking knobs. These are supposed to be the original knobs going back onto the original pots that the bass was manufactured with. Somewhere I have a box with my pots and knobs. I'll dig it out and take some pix. Sounds very much like you do not have the original knobs. I rang them today on the off-chance, they still had the originals in a box somewhere but apparently the person I need to speak to isn't in until Monday. Won't be gigging with the DJ this weekend then
obbm
These are the pots and knobs that came off my DJ4. Pot spindles are 6.4mm. Knob holes are 6.5mm +. No lubrication required.
Platypus
If there there was a mix up on the returned items it could of course be the pots that are wrong and the knobs are the correct ones. Maybe Dave's pics will help P
niceguyhomer
The pots look about right but the knobs don't. Inside the knobs I have, there's brass sleeves. I'll check in the morning - can't be arsed now, I've just seen Status Quo at Blackpool and me 'ead's bangin'
niceguyhomer
Ok - here's a picture of the pots and knobs - the knobs are definitely wrong. I've just soldered everything up and it's all working fine. Gotta order a new c/p and knobs I guess
