dumelow
First off, if anybody doesnt use it, they should. Its basicly software that plays powertab aswell as guitarpro files. Its a fantastic way to read tab as you can slow sections down and really listen to the rhythm of something rather than guessing how something is played when reading standard tab. it can be downloaded here http://tuxguitar.herac.com.ar/ secondly, people who do use it, where do you find your tabs? I use guitar-universe myself and whilst it does have many many files on there, theres always certain tracks i cannot find
spinynorman
I use Guitar Pro. It's good, but I suppose the downside is you have to pay for it. I've been getting files from GProTab.net.

It's another case of companies shooting themselves in the foot by being too greedy imo.
spinynorman
Downloaded TuxGuitar. It's a very blatant GPro rip-off, except I can't see a way to mute or solo tracks. I don't think it's going to win me over, tbh, though I'm sure I'd use it of I didn't already have GPro.

The following procedure remedied the problem.) - quit Firefox if it's running - go to System-->Administration-->Software Sources and make sure the Partner repository is checked under third-party software. - in Terminal run sudo apt-get update (to update the lists of software available from the Ubuntu repositories) - in Applications-->Ubuntu Software Center remove OpenJDK Java 6 Runtime (doing so will automatically remove two dependencies as well) - in System-->Administration-->Synaptic Package Manager check mark and install sun-java6-plugin (doing so will automatically check mark and install its required dependencies) - reboot

janmaat
Hey, thanks, that was great. I'd love to start a "bassists using linux / free software" thread, that could be really helpful.

Not so much with 911tabs, but with any GP5 file that the guitarist in my band sent me. Even if it was a GP5 file I'd written myself, sent to him, and he'd made a change and sent it back to me, it still wouldn't work for me. No idea why. But that's exactly why I downloaded TuxGuitar.
