Tait
...who influences your basslines and gives you inspiration for your own line, or are they all your own style? for me it would have to be Ben Osmundson of Zebrahead, Paul Simonon and Mark Hoppus
Breakfast
When building up lines I'm big on Rick Kemp if I want something singing and melodic, Adam Clayton and Eric Avery if I want something with more push and groove, Jeff Ament if I'm wanting to riff and Nick Seymour most of the time... Dood
At the moment, I am throwing all caution to the wind and letting my guitarists write the bare bones structure of my bass lines! It's quite liberating actually... as I am making them force me to play differently. They both are very interested in trying anything that is a bit unusual, so I am making myself stay away from all my usual 'safe' moves. So, I guess the answer would be I am being influenced by my own band!
gypsymoth
it's certainly the intention to have them my own. as I've never taken the time to actually learn anybody else's stuff, any coincidence is purely similarity.
thumbo
I find that a lot of guitarists and drummers inspire the way I write music. I'm pretty 50/50 guitar/bass with writing stuff. I'll come up with something on guitar then go to my bass and vice versa because it opens ideas up for me.
wotnwhy
for the last year or so i've been playing in an (almost) straight up funk/soul band. we do some functions and as a result have learnt quite a few covers, and as a result of that i've been immersing myself in old school funk for a while, and there's deffinitly a certain vibe that needs to be headed for with regards to the way a bassline is played to get a genuine feel to a song, moreso than the notes of the bassline itself. and thats whats been influencing my writing recently
queenofthedepths
Little bit of Tom Arya some of the time, sometimes a bit of Jack Bruce (very very rarely in the same context...), but I never think consciously about playing in someone else's style, unless it's the bassist from Necrophagist Most of the time I try to specifically do my own thing
Alun
Depends on the style of music. If it's funk or soul then James Jamerson, Jaco and Francis Rocco Prestia won't be far from my mind For pop and proggy stuff then Tony Levin will get a look in For my occasional metal ventures it'll be Cliff Burton and Geezer Butler For jazz, it's every man for themselves! Cheers, Alun
