SJA
Dunlop Tortex 80 or Peavey green 88 (cheaper than Dunlops) for me.
OldGit
Gibson three corner 1mm ("heavy") Nice and big and three points so it doesn't matter which way you pick it up.

dave_bass5
Clayton Acetal Polymer 1.90mm. Best picks i have used. Never had one break. I was after a more finger sound and these seemed to get a bit closer than the pick i was using at the time. BigRedX
Pick, fingers for bass is not an either or situation. You use the technique which gives you the sound you want for that particular song.
Faithless
I'm really trying to avoid playing bass with a pick - but I think I'll give in and have a go What picks, and what thickness do you picksters use? Hamster
I was trying to avoid and hate it and whatever else... but I now realised, pick'd give me some new sound, so it's the second week I'm practising a bit of it It really gives waaay different sound, but I haven't found mine yet, and, I can't get fully familiar with it. But I'll do, I think. Fingers fo' life, btw P.S. /Me's already using 1.14mm Dunlop. Yesterday I got one 0.88mm Dunlop, and one 1.14 with different form, so I'll try them out, but heavy picks are about the bass, IMHO. SJA
I've tried using heavier picks, eg. 1mm and thicker, but I've found they're a bit too stiff for fast 16th note alternate picking eg. the basslines to Duchess, New Gold dream.
Chop
I'm mostly a pick player because I started that way. Other than tonally I don't think it limits me, I find I can play fast as you like, or damp strings with right hand, but it seems almost like cheating.... I work on playing the same lines with fingers and mostly can but it isn't as natural, so live revert to pick if in doubt. Can't do Hit me with your rhythm stick speed with fingers ! At the back of my mind is the idea that "to be a real bass player you should play with your fingers". No logic to that ! Anybody else feel this? I feel fine about using a pick. its not cheating IMO. But, i do feel to get a proper sound, one i really like i need to use fingers. Its the sound of pick on the D an dG i dont like. I feel they sound too thin Edited January 10, 2008 by dave_bass5

Im sure im the only one who notices it but i do find more variation in tone with fingers. there are a few more songs where i can uase fingers in our set but i tend to get lazy and switch back to pick if its getting too fast. Wil
Its got loads of punch, that may well be the Ampeg + P combination... fair play if he uses fingers though, he must have pretty good stamina Ha ha, just browsing Decendents vids, and they did a great cover of Wendy by the Beach Boys http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=srQhGvkW_JQ...feature=related Edited January 10, 2008 by Wil
flip
I believe Karl Alvarez always plays fingerstyle, I read something about the fact he kept dropping plectrums so he just decided to use his fingers instead! I think he used a Stingray on my favourite Decendents album (Everything Sucks) but tends to use Fender basses now. Great player...

Leowasright
P with a pick? AC/DC's Cliff Williams on ant post '77 AC/DC album. YOU try and get that metronomic effect, it is actually harder than you think straight 8s are...... I do believe he also used a MM Stingray in the early 80's. foal30
I like the palm mute approach with Pick on some slower soul numbers. and yes it is always important to mention Anthony Jackson. I like Dunlop .60's and rarely the .88 for a bit more bite.

Their fans are a bit odd. He's good though - very chas n dave. Deffo not P with a pick Good tone is easy with a pick on a P - but with fingers, there's more variety.
