A few questions... DB case / SE luthiers / bow re-hair

right, my double bass has been lying dormant for longer than I'd care to admit. I'm looking to get back on the wagon, but need to sort out a few things first and get the bass checked over.

1. I need a new decent soft case for it. Any recommendations? I think it's a full size bass, as far as I'm aware.
2. My (German) bow needs re-hairing, if thats the correct term! Can anyone recommend somewhere in London who's good at this kind of thing.
3. Ditto, a luthier to do a once-over and set up, new-strings etc, again in London or South-East.
4. Any recommendations of good amature orchestras in west London?

If any one is interested, my DB is a 1966 Pollmann, and looks similar to the Busseto model: http://www.poellmann-contrabass.de/index.html although it doesn't state the name on the label inside.

thanks!
G

I have a Gewa (http://www.gewamusic.com) that I like. There's been a thread on here recently that's got more info on other's preferences: http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=50277

Never had a re-hair done. The woman who works at Healy's (http://www.healeyviolins.co.uk/) did my teacher's, I think. You could ask whilst you're having your set-up done. He's very good. He'll also stick any strings you bring to him on it, which might save some cash. He's done set up + quite a number of little jobs on mine that I've been very happy with.

Check out http://www.amateurorchestras.org.uk/olondon.htm - caution; some I've spoken to are quite snobby & think grade 8 is a "minimum". Let me know how you get on. This might not be the best time to find one as the friendlier ones are run by school teachers who go on holiday over the summer. YMMV.

thanks dougal - i posted in a rush last night, and hadn't really done a search yet - I checked that thread on the cases, and theres some good suggestions in there, plus yours, so it looks like I've got some research to make. Thanks for the healys link too, I will take a closer look...

I think I'd already found that link to London orchestras - there were a couple that rehearse quite close to where I live - I guess I will follow up with them and see how I find them. Otherwise, if anyone has any first hand positive experiences, please let me know. I'm not really looking at doing much about it until the autumn anyway, I don't think I'll have time between work/holidays etc, and I'm sure most of them wind down in the summer months anyway. I'll let you know how it goes!

Check out his repair/restorations. His basses are also amazing.

Sounds like you have a great bass so let us know how it goes
Thanks Geoff, I will check Martyn's site. Even more reassuring to know that he builds basses himself :)

cheers
