6stringbassist
Anyone know of any books with latin tunes transcribed in standard notation, NOT tab. I want to practice my reading of latin tunes for some upcoming gigs. Thanks
Doddy
If you are after the melodies, try 'The Latin Real Book' by Sher Music. If you want bass lines, they do a Latin bass book too.

jakenewmanbass
Funkifying the Clave is a fabulous book, it has a full explanation of all the original grooves across the Latin spectrum, and it also has some stonking modern funky versions of the same, all written out and brilliantly demonstrated by Lincoln Goines and Robbie Ameen. Definitely worth getting IMV It is conceived ala a NYC Salsa rendition of all the traditional grooves. Highly recommended.
XB26354
I'd recommend the Latin Bass Book. It takes you from a basic clave (breaking the "western" dependency on bass on the one) through to some quite obscure and tricky South American styles. It has tons of reading practice and 3 very good CD's with all the examples you need. A lot of the early examples go on for quite a while, which is really helpful when learning to play tumbaos and unison rhythms. Yes, it is not cheap, but out of all the music education books I have ever purchased, it was one of the most enlightening and useful. The Real Cuban Bass is an English/Spanish history of salsa and other styles - a good read but not really practice, more as a reference book. The Salsa Guidebook for Piano and Drums - a very useful "band" book, but like Brazilian Music Workshop, not really geared towards bass. Great for appreciating what other instruments play. Funkifying the Clave - good once you understand salsa pretty well, but not a "learning" book on latin music as the original examples are a bit brief imho. Of course, it depends how much you know about latin already!
Bilbo
All good advice. My only beef with all of this info on Latin bass playing is that there doesn't seem to be much of a market for the equivalent 'Latin Drumming'. I got the Goines/Ammen book a decade ago but have rarely come across a drummer who was able to go there with me!!
6stringbassist
I got it for £29 in the end from Jazzwise. Thanks for all of your advice everyone !

Of course, newer Cuban styles and other 'Latin' music like bossanova do use drumkits but I agree, it's hard to find drummers who understand this stuff. steviedee
Woohoo just found 'Funkifying the Clave' in the cupboard I bought it years ago when I was in a 'Latinish' band but it was in standard notation so I was snookered, I remember there were some great grooves on it. Now I'm beginning to read music I can work out the notes but it's so old the tunes are on a cassette, you cant win can you!
