Sparky
Can anyone recommend a good place for me to take my bass for a check-up and service please? Somewhere that won't charge too much to look, diagnose and quote for work, and then depending on what needs to be done, I can trust to do a good job. Manchester city centre would be convenient but I don't mind travelling for a good service. Thanks in advance. Sparky

I just bought it on evil bay this weekend and the strings on it were in a shocking condition and the action was way too high. I've got to collect it after work, so I'll let you know how it is later this evening. I've only ever used his services for putting on new strings and setting up, but he's been way cheaper than any one else I've used, and I've always been happy with the results. Just found the pinned 'Recommended Luthiers' topic in the 'Repairs and Technical Issues' forum: http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=253 and there are a couple of M'cr places on there that i may call up for a quote... feedback on your guy would be cool too... thanks again. sparky
bigd1
I have always used Matt Ryan, absolutely top at all things guitar http://www.guitarrepairer.com/ BIGd P.s I hate to say this but on no account use Bonecats, not if you value your bass. Also I think he rides a horse and has a big hat on (if you get my drift PARTNER) Edited December 3, 2007 by bigd1
Rayman
Sounds Great in Heald Green, or Ged Green in Cheadle. Both top places for a setup, but Ged is a luthier too and does all my setups and repairs: http://www.gedgreen.co.uk/ Edited December 3, 2007 by Rayman

Sparky
Anyone had experience with this guy? Steve Robinson www.manchesterguitartech.co.uk ..he's on Hampster's list. Have had quotes from both him and Ged Green and also a list of what's included in the price. Mr. Robinson is offering more for less... just wondering if anyone had dealt with him before? First when I played 6 strting and now for Bass work. I can thoroughly recommend him. First class work and not that expensive. In fact I have a Bass waiting to go but can't send it until the back-up arrives, (today I hope...). Last job i had done was routing the body of Fender Jazz for a battery box. Looks factory fitted. guyl
I took a bass to Sounds Great a number of years ago. It had a shiny finish, and when it came back, looked like it had been dragged across a dirty workbench - really badly scratched along the bottom edge. Don't recall the blokes name - had a shaven head and still works there now. For a while everyone in South Manchester seemed to use a chap in Altrincham. I only used him once - spilling glue on my natural finish Warwick was definately a turnoff! Trying to clean it off with wire wool when I complained was downright upsetting! Although I've had great service/advice from the repairmen at BassCentre London and the bass specialist in Mansfield Woodhouse that is now shut, the bad local experiences encouraged me to learn how to set up and maintain my own bass. Sounds good to me. Thanks for the recommendation - it was just what I needed. Thanks again, Sparky.
ednaplate
If I can add my tuppence worth I would also recommend Ged Green. Very friendly chap. I just turned up with my bass and was shown into his workshop while he gave it the once over and didn't charge me anything. While he was doing that he let me have a go on a custom built acoustic (sorry but I do dabble in six string heaven too) that he'd just finished building. Simply stunning build quality with an action and feel to die for. I could have spent the whole day in there. He made no money out of me but I will definitely keep him as my 'personal guitar tech'
