Apologies for mentioning this guy from 70s funk band Slave again, but he's one of the unsung heroes of bass playing. His tone is arguably one of the best in bass history.

Great player who ever he was.
Some debate over the years as to who it was.
I thought it was Mark Adams, some suggest Buddy Hankerson .
But hey who knows - great whoever.
Great post by the way.

Little debate from last year here, with a couple of decent videos.

Mark Adams definitely played on the classic Slave albums. His sounds seems to be right on the edge of distortion, and reminds me of Nate Watts' sound on 'I Wish'.

Nobody really had a sound like that before him. I'm not sure what bass he used initially - probably a Fender - but he used an Alembic eventually.

He's both underrated and understated.

Defo a Jazz Bass , very much a sound of that time on those type of tracks.
Over driven and squashed compressed.
Bit like this sound.
