Hi guys,

here's another wee transcription. This time it's a look at the african 12/8 grooving on "proof" from the 1991 Paul Simon Live in Central Park concert.

It's a little insight into a part of what's a great overall gig full of some world class bass.

cheers and keep on groovin,

Johnny

Nice work, dude..

I've spotted that your work out the harmony within the tune..

Just curious, how did you get it going, I mean, working it out - I suppose, you use piano to determine chords?

Why I am asking is that I have no problem transcribing separate parts, but harmony behind notes is sometimes a bit of a mistery to me..

Hi F,

Usually the chords are just my best guess. :) The main thing I usually aim to find is what 4-part chord the player is thinking. If you can sing the chord type in your head or out loud and it 'fits' you should be right. I've always played piano as well as bass which helps. Obviously in some music there are more complex chords on top, but from what i've learned from many good gtr and keys players is that it's usually the basic 4part chord they are focused on first before worrying about anything else like 9ths 11ths etc. Gary Willis' book on ear-training is a good starting point for recognising chords by ear too - worth a look if you haven't already.

cheers,

Johnny

Well, I also play some keys, and yeah, it helps, so I just hook a chord on top and see if it fits.. Basically, all I can 'detect' is if it's major or minor, well, and then I try to add some 9ths or something if chord sounds 'thick'.. But my knowledge (and ear) is waay too poor to properly detect chords..

I was thinking about some ear-training material, so I'll give Willis book a go, although shouts like 'ear training for guitarists/bassists/whatever' puts me off a lil - how can be ear-training different to a bassist or pianist, for example, eh.. :)

cheers, Johnny

Solar Radio play a lot of funky tunes like this one, but I always forget to take down the names of the bands.

I'll start with Mandrill! Ta.
