philw
All, I've been using Status half-rounds on my fretless Wal for ages. They're lovely strings but I fancy a change. The bass has an ebony fingerboard so I don't need to worry too much about using round-wounds on it, but then again, I don't want anything that sounds too bright. I usually go for 45 - 105 gauge or thereabouts. Any suggestions? Phil
Bass Culture
Any preference as to Nickels or Steel? I really liked La Bella Deep Talkin' strings when I used them a year or so ago. Since then I've reverted back to good old Roto's though... Edited July 12, 2010 by Bass Culture
yorick
Roto RS66's. Or Ernie Ball Hybrid Slinkys
RhysP
I use La Bella slappers on my fretless Zon & they're great.
BassBod
Thomastik flats are the bizz (not quite buzzzzz) on fretless, but you may have to adjust your set up for their floppy feel. I also love DR Sunbeams (nickel rounds) for a warmer "jaco" tone
Bilbo
Rotosound Solo Bass (groundwounds) - have used them n my Wal for 23 years with no discernable fretboard wear. BB2000
Picato, Pete used to fit them as standard. Only £8 a set!
BigRedX
I'm using either LaBella Hard Rocking Steels, Pedulla Nickels. Overwater Nickels or TI Jazz Flats on my various fretless basses (none of them are Wals although two have the ACG filter pre-amp). Take your pick... philw
Thanks all. I'll maybe try a couple and report back. Phil
MOSCOWBASS
I use DR sumbeams on my fretless....nice growl and feel.
AndroWal
DR Hi-Beams....been using them on my Wals and others for years. Just tried the LoRiders....a stiffer stainless steel from DR. Their OK, but not as bright or articulate as the Hi-Beams to my ears. Love the Hi-Beams. They haven't chewed-up my fretless Wals at all...and I play fretless almost exclusively. Lfalex v1.1
DR Sunbeams here, too. Smooth and warm (for roundwounds), so great on fretless.
philw
DR Sunbeams fitted. They feel great – nice and loose and not at all "sticky" on the left hand. They sound a bit bright at the moment but I'm sure they'll calm down a bit. Thursday's rehearsal will be the real test but I have very high hopes.
