phil.mcglassup
I have a couple of basses that I am about to sell to fund my next bass, however, I have looked all over the 'net for some idea of values but prices seem to be all over the place especially with one of mine as it doesn't have chrome fittings like most of the ones I've seen so this might affect it's value. Where might I look to get the most accurate values as I don't want to overprice them, neither do I want to give them away!! Any pointers appreciated. phil.mcglassup
Cheers Guys!! First-Mid 80's Fender Precision Bass. Black. Rosewood fingerboard, black head and tuners. Mid '80's. Japan. Three very, very small damaged areas. Needs new strings. With hard rectangular case. Second- Hohner B2a headless bodiless. In red. Active.Recent new strings. Just about like new. Does have a home-made wooden case- useful but in all fairness is heavy and scruffy!. I'll upload some pics shortly!!

Clarky
I say much lower for the Precision, probably no more than £500 depending on condition/modifications. However the 80s is a tricky period (when you have highly valued Squier JVs etc) and I am not at all sure. OldGit is the expert on Japanese Precisions and I'm sure he'll be on shortly Edited July 14, 2010 by Clarky
casapete
Around £150 / £200 for the Hohner, (possibly a bit more as red ones not as common as black) Maybe more on ebay - they seem to fluctuate in price a lot.

I'll await the pics but I think BudgetBassist may be a tad ambitious on that price (unless you are buying BB, in which case I may be able to get you a few ) The black headstock and tuners smacks of the P specials unless it's a Lyte. Either way those generally go for under £500. The only early 80's Fenders over £500 I've seen are JV serial number ones and they don't have black headstocks and tuners, IME. Good pictures will help, also the start of the serial number

Rayman
£450 for the Precision, and £300 for the Hohner, that'd be my guess. Pictures will help a lot though.

simon1964
I'm no expert, but I do own a CIJ Precision and a red Hohner B2a, so its only right that I offer an opinion I'd say £350 to £450 for the Precision. As Old Git suggests, it will depend on the model. The reissues go for more than the standard models. I think much more than £200 is optimistic for the Hohner. They're cracking basses, but I think I got mine for about £140 off ebay a year or so back.

phil.mcglassup
Here's the pics- sorry if they're a tad big and not very clear but they give a guide. The precision has two small dings which I could not get a good pic of in addition to the two shown. warwickhunt
When you ask for a price you'll got anything from an optimistic guess/educated calculation to worse still, values from those looking to pick up a cheap bass or those who own an identical model that want to see it worth as much as possible. I have no intention of buying from you nor do I own either basses so my prices fall into the former category. My value of the Hohner is based upon having owned/sold one and having recently helped someone else source one, the value of the P bass is lower than some values mentioned because it isn't a 'normal' MIJ P bass and as such it has a divided market; if the right person is looking for exactly that bass you may achieve more but I'll stick my neck out and think you'll not have a massive queue forming if you put it up for £500. Hohner: £120 - £200 P Bass: £280 - £
phil.mcglassup
Thanks for all the info everyone. What sort of P bass is it? Does it have a specific name?
Bassassin
If you're talking Ebay, rather than BassChat/Scumtree/local rag then £250 - £300 is entirely realistic for the B2A. It's an early one in an uncommon colour so this will help - they're getting into the "rare & collectable" category for some people. I'm not a huge MIJ Fender expert but the E-serial & the 80s all black/no scratchplate look might well go in its favour - they're not exactly 10-a-penny. £350-£400, maybe. Having had a couple of slightly disappointing sales recently I'm inclined to think there's a bit of post-budget belt-tightening in the market at the moment. If it's not urgent to sell them it might be worth hanging fire for a month or two to see if it picks up - plus there's usually an autumn lull between summer (holidays) and winter (Xmas) when people have a bit more bass-money, in my experience. OldGit
OK I was right (phew) that's one of the odd Japanese Precision specials (NB not a "Precision Special") with no scratchplate. I seem to remember they have a narrow jazz style neck. maybe a 38mm nut? I think they are quite light too. What does it weigh? As had been said they have a good reputation and I've seen a few sell for around the £400 mark in good nick. You may be lucky and get £450 but I'd agree that it may sit around for some time at £500... It will depend on the right person coming along, though, as these are a bit "non traditional" for a lot of P players.
