Hoffmann
Hey guys!! I just created my own bass blog on how to groove. It gathers ways of grooving from different forums, bass players (such as Stuart Zender from early Jamiroquai albums) and my personnal stuffs! I hope it can help some of you people out there!! Groove Secrets Blog Of course, any comment (good or bad) would be much appreciated!! And if you feel like sharing some groove ideas, please feel free to post them here (althought I'll a have a regular look at your grooves in the forum itself!) Cheers!! Btw, I am new here! Hello everyone!!
algmusic
I like the fact that you've started with just playing simple things. I did a gig with Winston blissett (I was on drums). What got me thinking about my own bass playing was how he played the simple things so bloody well.. after that I re-learnt every song I've played and just tried to play less, but make that feel great.. that's groove I starting doing the same on drums

skankdelvar
IMO that's a pretty useful blog for beginning groovers and contains some handy reminders for the more 'exuberant' experts. Anything that might reduce the amount of contextually unneccessary overplaying is good for a Nobel Prize. Personally, I'd try to get the 'articles' to read chronologically top to bottom. Reading these things in reverse order can be a bit confusing for old men like me. Either way, nice effort (good comic / newspaper analogy) and ta for posting the link to it. Spoombung
I prefer contextually necessary undergrooving with a hint of minimal UN-sanctioned plod

I like plod almost as much as I like groove. M'mmmmm, the mouthwatering flavour of full-fat, creamy plod. Now available in Classic Original and All-New Cheese and Chive flavour. I think we should make a concerted effort here on Basschat to extoll the virtues of plod and it associated flat-footed, inarticulate 'IT'-less sub-genres. (I used to overplay, with a sound almost free of bass frecuencies... the worst for a bass player in a band! ^^)

I wonder if you can shed some light on a track I love. It's "Somewhere in Between" by Kate Bush, and the bassist is Pino Palladino. Most of the time he's playing incredibly simple lines, but there is a feeling to it that I just cannot capture. Any tips? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4-HiDZ1MqWo Actually the whole album has a lot of beautiful bass playing on it, but I think this track has the highest ratio of quality to number of notes played! steve-soar
I prefer contextually necessary undergrooving with a hint of minimal UN-sanctioned plod
Unfortuanately, I nailled my groove to the floor back in 1994 and have been unable to move it since. Government guidelines suggest the recommended daily intake of Groove is no more than 12.5%, or 1/8th if you will. Feel is 25%, taste has a R.D.A. of 10% and influences vary from 30% to a staggering level, 42% in some cases. The other remaining 10.5-22.5% of a modern bass players breakfast, comes from a mixture of PLOD and "what was that I just played?".
Hoffmann
thanks Mart! I've had a look at Somewhere in Between and I think I am going to write my next article on this! IMHO, I think it is what Victor Wooten says about breathing along a bass line: you do not breath really fast or in a staccato way when you want to express something cool for example. Wooten says one has to breath along his/her bassline and I think it really helps. Something I found really interesting was when I tried to compose a song for my girlfriend - I first started breathing like if I was with her and very excited. With this breathing pattern I made a bass line and then composed a song (that I think looks like a love/sexy song ) It is on my myspace page if you want to listen to it, it is called "rainy paris". Anyway, I'll write an article on this later! Edited July 22, 2010 by Hoffmann
Hoffmann
Next article! Working on a root octave pattern! That's what I call Foooonky!! It is about breathing with your bass line! It is from Victor Wooten's ideas! Enjoy!!

He basically talks about which state of minds a bass player should be while playing music... very interesting! ^_^
