Who Said You Couldn't Slap on a Rickenbacker ?

I'm really liking the sound of Ricks lately. Always been aware of the nice middy round tone you get from these. Can't afford one though

The first vid is not so much slap but double thumb muting and the guy is using the thumb as you would a pick with a palm mute.

The pull-offs are very few and far between which is as well, as the bass sound on a Rickenbacker is too full for a genuine slap style, IMO.

I think it works on that bass in that context though...

dunno bout the rickenbacker but he has lessons in how to slap, I may teach myself!

He's a great player who can probably make any bass sound great for any style.

Although these clips sound great I can't help thinking they'd sound even better played on a different bass! (I've nothing against Riks by the way)

He's not really playing "slap" there though it's more a pick style sound. I like it.

Don't like the tone personally, it doesn't sound punchy enough or fat enough for slap, the sound's far too dry imo. If you like that kinda thing, then fine, but it's a bit like trying to play the blues with an Ibanez guitar through a Mesa amp IMO, just doesn't suit.

A good preamp and compression and a lot of basses will sound good slapped. I've seen this guys stuff before, he's really great, but I do not think it's an accurate measure of what a Rickenbacker sounds like, especially not amplified by the usual means.

I much prefer that chunky, gutsy sound to the pingy, nasal modern slap sound everybody uses.
