Cantdosleepy Posted December 5, 2007 Posted December 5, 2007 The P/J is common, and so is J/MM. Have you guys ever seen a P/MM? What do you think it would be good for? I'm planning on getting some new pickups at Xmas for my MIJ jazz, and I've been tempted by the talk surrounding Wizard. Would a P/MM combo be an insane switchup from J/J? Quote

john_the_bass Posted December 5, 2007 Posted December 5, 2007 i saw a bass on ebay yesterday or the day before that i think was an old jap copy of a precision which had a p and an mm pickup. if you coil tapped the mm pickup, potentially you could get a p/j sound as well as the p/mm sound? or even a p, j or mm on their own. maybe Quote
Hit&Run Posted December 5, 2007 Posted December 5, 2007 Fender's USA Deluxe Precision has a p & (nearly)MM pickups: DLX Quote
Lfalex v1.1 Posted December 5, 2007 Posted December 5, 2007 Not a million miles removed from a MIA Deluxe "P" They've got a "P" and the Double "J" style HB at the bridge - Same sort of Pick-up as the one used in the "Big Block" model. Nothing wrong with an P/MM It's like a back to front Attitude, too. They're HB/P... Quote

ped Posted December 5, 2007 Posted December 5, 2007 I think Clover do a P/MM bass. Makes sense to me, as I find front J pickups a bit noisy and sometimes a bit brittle when soloed. Quote
Cantdosleepy Posted December 5, 2007 Author Posted December 5, 2007 Yeah - I played a deluxe P a few years ago. I really enjoyed it, but I'm just not an active electronics person. Would it make sense just to have the classic jazz 'volume neck / volume bridge / tone' pot combo on a bass with this pickup combo? Quote
ped Posted December 5, 2007 Posted December 5, 2007 If it was me I would like a blend control and a coil tap for the humbucker. Quote

Cantdosleepy Posted December 5, 2007 Author Posted December 5, 2007 Is a blend control a good idea on a passive? I've only ever seen them on actives. So what would that be, then? 'volume / blend / tone' ? Which one of those babies would be most sensible for coil tapping? Quote
ped Posted December 5, 2007 Posted December 5, 2007 There may be a reason you can't use a blend on a passive bass - I am not sure to be honest! I prefer it though myself, but then I have had mainly active basses. I think the coil tap would be best as a little switch - you could have a push/pull pot though but I don't like them myself. If you want to remain passive you might like to check out the Villex booster, I think it would help you get the most out of a passive bass with such pickup config. Cheers matey ped Quote
Cantdosleepy Posted December 5, 2007 Author Posted December 5, 2007 Brill - thanks for all the advice! It's going to be a good month until I can afford this - time to put some serious thought in! Quote

BUT I'm thinking about changing pickups and going over to VVT controls (Or twin humbuckers with twin volumes and a rotary switch offering various coil tap and series/parallel options) Quote
Russ Posted December 7, 2007 Posted December 7, 2007 My custom Sei singlecut 5 has a MM+P pickup config (the P is in a humbucker-type housing though). I requested it specifically, as I wanted the bite of the MM pickup combined with the low-mid thud of the P. Works brilliantly, wish there were more basses with that configuration. Quote
Alun Posted December 9, 2007 Posted December 9, 2007 It's certainly do-able and will sound great, but just be aware that the position of the pickup makes a difference as well as the type. so an MM at the bridge may not sound like an MM bass as the pickuup is further towards the neck. On a slight tangent, I always liked the look of the J/P/J ( not John Paul Jones!) on the Fender Urge. Cheers, Alun Quote

paul, the Posted December 10, 2007 Posted December 10, 2007 I'd love to try a passive P-pup with an active MM-pup. A bit of a jack of all trades bass. I'll keep an eye or two on this thread. Quote
