Ibanez GW fretless - fret markers

This is driving me absolutely mad - I can't play my Gary Willis fretless high up the neck because it chokes on the 16th fret. Notes above the 16th fret aren't too bad but when I look down the neck I can see white fret markers sticking up a bit up around there.

I've tried tapping them down but they seem loose in the groove and won't site correctly.

Any ideas?

I'd have to outsource that - if I did it, it would look like the surface of the moon after I'd finished.
