afuneraloffire89
I just got a 6 string fret-less bass and It came with round wound nylon strings. Can I use regular nickel round wound strings or will this damage my fretboard over time? Thanks
BigRedX
If round wound strings give you the sound you want then use them. Nickels will be kinder to your fingerboard than steels, but sometimes you might need to extra bite you get with steels. As for fingerboard wear I think lots of people are over-cautious when it comes to fretless basses. You know that round wounds wear the frets too and eventually you'll need a refret. Don't sacrifice tone for the sake of a bit of wear - which might never happen depending on the fingerboard material - your luthier can always reshoot the fingerboard if it becomes an issue. Delberthot
I used Ti flats on mine but it was active. i think a passive 6 would sound sh*t with flats
afuneraloffire89
Cool, thanks. I meant to say flat wound but if I can use round wound that's even better.
Dom in Dorset
I put rounds on a rosewood board and they started chewinging it very quickly. Ebony seems to cope with rounds better. I'm a big fan of nylons.
