When I was a kid I used to annoy my Mum by playing "My Sharona" endlessly. I haven't got a copy now but from memory the bass doesn't follow the riff anyway does it? :)

In terms of fun and developing skill... Learn to read!!!

Some songs...

Learn a walking bass line for a 12-bar blues/rock - Invaluable for so many jobs.
Queen - Another one bites the dust
Status Quo - Ain't Complaining (great for fills)
Queen - Crazy little thing called love
David Bowie - Let's Dance
James Brown - I feel good

That's all the function band stuff - I could go on and on, but you get the jist...

In my world, there are sooo many essentials to know... I'm writing a book of jazz standard bass lines as we speak... :)

Damn right. Although making them up as you go along can be entertaining. Especially when playing gigs half cut.
