Odd Rick on eBay

I'm no Rickenbacker expert but this ebay item seems strange. The neck in particular, shouldn't it be striped and show through the body?

4001s have the dark stripe down the middle - 4003s don't.

Hmm, I'm seeing other blonde ones now on the Bay with similar stripeless necks. Awfully low starting price, still I guess it does immediately grab the attention amongst all the 4 figure pricings.

It's pretty much the same as mine TBH.

I did say to put a reserve on it but he's confident it'll sell for a good price, ought to it's very nice!

having said that, it appears there are (if the pictures are to be believed) some 4001s out there without the darker stripe - but as a general rule of thumb, I'm mostly right

from the Ric forum : "The Shedua strip (skunk stripe) was added to the 4001 to strengthen the neck. It came into being around 1972/1973, and ended when the 4001 ceased production."

Not all of them. The skunk stripe started in mid-ish '72. Anything prior doesn't have it. So actually there were only around ten years when Rics [i]did [/i]have it; the majority of Rics therefore don't.

A few months ago this factory one-off appeared in Rickenbacker's Ebay shop:

Absolute stunner in my opinion and a possible hint they might reintroduce the stripe, like they did with the full-width inlays.
