there must be a solo that brings you out of that middle ground?
Its not just bass its kinda anything. I think the problem lies in that the first 'solo' i can remember hearing, of any desription, was (guitar solo)'Eruption' by Eddie Van Halen. Just the fire and passion (and the fact it was him just warming up and being recorded, which i found out years later) just blew my head off. And i ain't heard anything of same intensity anywhere on anything since.
I always liked the solo from Free's live version of Mr Big. Not strictly a solo, but the bass takes over the lead. Very simple but very effective.

The legendary Andy Fraser on bass. :)

It's certainly not very simple - try playing it note perfect with his feel.

I love Entwistle but I've got to admit that leaves me stone cold. :)

Actually you're right about about that. Those bends and vibrato are a complete bugger, especially when you're a puny bassist like myself.

My current favourites would be....

John Patitucci's upright solo in the live GRP big band take of sister sadie (the vid of which has vanished from youtube but check out the recording if you're into jazz, its incredible)

Tony Grey's solo in the extended version of summer rain featuring the Hiromi Trio
