Rich
Well... if you're the sort of person who likes bass solos, then yes there have been lots of good ones. If you're the sort of person who doesn't like bass solos, then no.
Tony Grey's solo in the extended version of summer rain featuring the Hiromi Trio http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VL14_nd2C2Q
That is glorious. Melodic, not overly flashy, just fabulous.
Mcgiver69
Ok a couple of faves - Brand new heavies "You are the universe" it's very short but it's the highlight of the song. Solo at 2:04 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-dPf9GQEdes...feature=related - Wham "I'm you man" the original long version wit Dion Estus playing a very hot solo at 4:31 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8G1K9wX7ZmY - Gil Scott Heron "is that Jazz", this live version doesn't really do justice to the recorded solo but will give you an idea. If you can get the original recording you'll hear a truly great solo. maybe my favourite solo of all times. MoonBassAlpha
Kim Clark's solo on Defunkt's "Avoid the Funk" is one of my fave's. (the album is "Thermonuclear Sweat") Concise and funky as hell - gotta love that envelope filter! The phrasing is great too.
bumnote
Considering how recent the introduction of the Fender Bass had been, Jet Harris's solo in Nivram is pretty decent. In fact a lot of Jet's playing would have been extremely innovative at that time. Maybe worth going back to those early Shadows tracks & having a listen. G.
I occasionally play with a shadows band and most of Jets playing considering we are talking about 1960 to 62 is pretty awesome. They are still fun to play, and are a long way from simple lines. Nivram is still played nearly 50 years later so its stood the test of time. I probably wouldnt be playing if it wasnt for him, in the same way as guitarists from all walks genrally acknowledge Hank Marvin as an influence. Jet Harris guested in our local pub last Wednesday with another Shadows band.
michael-faces
Anyone else listen to Michael Manring? He does some really cool stuff. Should be touring in the spring as well xD. EDIT: Also, Billy sheehan's NV4 3345 solo is amazing Edited August 7, 2010 by michael-faces
scalpy
Working my way through these slowly. Some of them I see as more of a focus on the rhythm section especially the older ones. Funnily I've always liked double bass solos so really enjoyed the Don't Mean a Thing. Anything that remotely smells of trade show puts me right off! Went to see the Lee Jones Band in Ludlow on Saturday and there was a bass solo in every number. Luckily they were a great, great band and the bass solos were kept short! When I've found out the name of the guy I'll put it up.

Bilbo
I guess the question is what is the purpose of a bass solo. Regrettably, it is seldom a musical decision and usually come from a bad space (showboating, routine space filling etc). A lot of Jazz is based on soloing but, in truth, I can count the really musically valid bass solos I have come across on the fingers of one hand. Mind you, the same could be said of every other instrument. Best trombone solo ever? 'Spiritual Awakening' off Marcus Roberts' Deep In The Shed (on Spotify) - now THAT's musical... It sounds great, must listen to more trombonists and rip them off mercilessly.
Hamsalad
This is probably one of the meanest intro bass solos around, especially in the context; Juan Aldrete is a beast. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9TB_fi1fB3k Watch the second part as well if you want a blinding bongo solo. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r4ov7UZt4K4...feature=related I know the Mars Volta aren't everyone's brand, but keep an open mind. One thing I would add to the accurate list above is insecurity. The bass player has to prove he's just a valid musician as the rest of the band and therefore must have a solo. Of course there is the odd occasion where a solo is necessary and the Don't mean a Thing on here which I've mentioned on here before is one example. Bilbo is correct in that soloing isn't always valid but some instruments lend themselves to them more than the bass. Too many of the examples mentioned IMO are out to out guitar guitar solos. Dare I suggest on the whole they do it better...
Big_Stu
Hearing this a few times eventually made me get a bass built like it. High o'put pickups & an onboard overdrive. Especially like the chords intro section of Spirit In The Sky at the end of it, what a grind! Claypool's little 4 bar break is supremely cool, although I prefer the later live versions of 'Tommy the Cat' with 'The Awakening' tagged on.He does a cool little solo on 'Those Damn Blue Collar Tweekers' aswell. I like 'Boning in the Boneyard' too.
