Quick update, the heavier strings sounded great and I could hear myself over the guitar! Success! Next step is some sort of pedal/sansamp to boost my sound. Cheers for the help guys!
Cheap one to try is the Behringer BDI21, seems to do a good enough impression of the Sansamp that you can decide if you want one, and not to expensive that you can't keep in gig bag in case of catastrophic rig failure.

Hi,
I've an EBS Multidrive overdrive pedal. If you'd like to try it before spending out on pedals, just pm me your address. If this is unsuitable for your needs, I'm sure others on here will say.

Heavy rock? The mids are your friend.

Medium gauge strings are fine 45-105, on a jazz I'd turn everything up full, and clunk the strings like a head on colision between a tractor and a bulldozer.

Sansamp would be great, Aguilar tone hammer would be better IMO.

The Aerodyne should be fine.
