You know when some new gadget comes out (Wii, Iphone etc) and the news reports show loads of crazy people queuing up outside the shop at midnight to be the first to own it...? I usually shake my head in disbelief and mutter under my breath "haven't those people got anything better to do?" If SWR release a MM signiture Pre-amp, that'll be me standing in the rain outside the shop at midnight!!!! I feel so dirty and ashamed Edited December 10, 2007 by woodster

gilmour
I saw Marcus at the Jazz Cafe, not last time but the time before, when he was still using the EBS stuff. What a tone, he gets such balls in his slap tone compared to most players, blew me away. I think I would use the word 'meaty' definatley no twangy nickel strings there. But he's had that tone for years and years, I'm sure it's down to his style, strings, and any onboard preamps he might have on his bass (not sure if he does or not), in that order. What a player though, he may not be as fast as Wooten but more than makes up for it in tone, and his ability to hold a groove whilst soloing. Wish I'd gone to the last one now, but couldn;t afford it at the time
Subthumper
Just found this on Youtube,it s a great shot of his technique whilst just having a bit of a jam by himself. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NHdN_O5k3WM...feature=related Its not really amps and cabs but I thought it was good. bnt
I'm curious what people think of SWR in general, and their amps - any opinions?. I used to lust after the Mo'Bass head, the one that Bryan Beller pushed for while he worked there*. Now I'm wondering what effect the Fender takeover has had, whether the quality is the same? * Bryan tells the story on his website (here) of how he ended up as vice-president of the company, managed the takeover by Fender, but kicked it in to go back to music full-time. I've been a fan of his work with Mike Keneally for years, but this year he toured with Steve Vai. guyl
I'm curious what people think of SWR in general, and their amps - any opinions?.
I have an older 350 (the red one) - bought about 10 yrs ago and think it is brilliant for electric bass. (Not so good with upright for some reason) It isn't quite powerful enough for me though so I bought a 750x which had that same great sound with lots of extra power. The 750x had serious reliability problems - the bass centre fixed it whilst under guarantee and a local repairer when the guarantee ended. In the end, I just couldn't rely on it, so it had to go. Bernmeister
Although we're going slightly off topic ("sorry all"). I've been using swr amps & cabs for more than 10 years & have never had any problems at all. I could go on to list the swr equipment that i proudly own, but i could always post a pic, but again that'll be going off topic. but i'll endeavour to put some pics up soon
Lfalex v1.1
I use a Marcus Miller signature product. DR FatBeams. They are superb strings. I like his tone and how he plays. I'm no slapper, but I thought I'd give them a go. I don't like the Fender MM signature Jazz, but I don't think it ships with DR strings on it somehow. I have a Squier 70's VM Jazz with a BadAss II and the FatBeams on it, plus a "Fatfinger". It sounds just how I'd want it to; A smoother, passive version of the MM signature Jazz. The key is (mainly) in his hands, ably supported by the strings and his particular bass. The strings are round-cored, making them MUCH more compliant than Hex-cored designs, hence his very light slap technique. They also fret very swiftly and easily. They're really good for Hammering on an off also. They'll be replacing Elixirs across my collection of Instruments in due course.
Rich
I had an SWR Triad cab for a while, bought it off CK in fact. It was a lovely sound, not massively loud in terms of the dB figure but a very rounded pure hifi sound. I'd have kept it if it hadn't been such a heavy bugger. Alun
Considering that he's had pretty much the same sound since the Miles days, I can't imagine the preamp making a huge difference to be honest. Think I'll join the EBS scavengers
