M4L666 Posted August 6, 2010 Posted August 6, 2010 I'm thinking Meshuggah with some of the clank dialed out, any ideas BC? Quote
tayste_2000 Posted August 6, 2010 Posted August 6, 2010 http://www.verellenamplifiers.com/products.html Big Spider I also like the Colorsound Bass Fuzz for this sort of thing so maybe the SFX Microfuzz Quote
nash Posted August 6, 2010 Posted August 6, 2010 Meshuggah aren't a stoner band and nor are they fuzzy. Also as far as I'm aware they haven't had a bassist for a long time and all the 'bass' is from their eight string guitars going through whatever hi gain amps they use. I'd suggest a valve head and something to really take the gain up another level. Maybe a Proco Rat? I'm not up on my hi gain bass distortion pedals anymore. I found a Line 6 DM4 good for a few different distortion emulators. Quote
M4L666 Posted August 6, 2010 Author Posted August 6, 2010 Meshuggah do have a bassist, and that's the tone I'm going for. And TBH, Meshuggah do appeal to stoners, even if they're not heavy rock, xD. I can't afford a new head, I'll look into the DM4 and the Colorsound, is that Verellen worth it though? nash Posted August 6, 2010 Posted August 6, 2010 I was always told that they didn't have a bassist and tbh I never bothered to look into it. I didn't mean that stoners aren't allowed to listen to them haha. I just meant they lean more toward death and experimental metal. Quote
Colledge Posted August 6, 2010 Posted August 6, 2010 for a stoner rock bass tone, you simply can't beat Karma to burn. Full of doom. He uses an acoustic head, i presume on the guitar distortion channel. Quote
blind pilot Posted August 6, 2010 Posted August 6, 2010 I see Karma to burn when they supported Monster Magnet last year - they were pretty cool! Quote
Dood Posted August 6, 2010 Posted August 6, 2010 Whatever crunch you add, make sure you have a clean channel of bass end mixed in as well, in order to keep the definition in there, especially if you are going for mental riffage. Not quite the same tone, but I use an MXR M80 for drive, but pull the treble all the way down, then mix in dry top and bottom through a second signal path. The result is a really tight bass tone I think you can do a similar thing on board the Ashdown Lomenzo pedal, where, like me, the distortion only affects the mid frequencies, leaving all the good stuff intact. M4L666 Posted August 6, 2010 Author Posted August 6, 2010 Yes, I have witnessed the full glory of Karma To Burn live, and I'm aiming for something like that but very very full, because I don't think I know anyone else who likes stoner. Quote
Colledge Posted August 7, 2010 Posted August 7, 2010 (threadjack) i saw Karma to Burn at sonisphere last weekend, they where headlining the jagermeister stage on the friday. there werent many people there, but the few people who where there were really into it and the band ended up doing a sabbath cover as an unexpected encore. The sound guy didnt like this and first cut the vocals mid song, then the bass. The bassist went nuts, threw his bass across the stage and it looked like he was about to rip the sound guys head off. I thought it was seriously unprofessional to just cut someone off like that mid song. especially seeing as they where the last band on that stage, and they cant blame licensing as there where bands on other stages after that too. If i where in the bands shoes i think i'd have done the same. they seem like a really cool bunch of guys. Quote
M4L666 Posted August 8, 2010 Author Posted August 8, 2010 I was there, OMG did you see the kid in the moshpit with purplish long hair? Quote
Colledge Posted August 8, 2010 Posted August 8, 2010 i can't say i do. i was right next to the pit though, so probably did see, just most of the weekend is a bit hazy. i remember the guy with blood all down his face acting like a prat though. was a great show. Quote
M4L666 Posted August 8, 2010 Author Posted August 8, 2010 Was wasn't it? Cheers for all the responses guys Quote
umph Posted August 8, 2010 Posted August 8, 2010 (edited) guitarist does all the bass on the albums, i'd recomend trying out a older rat or tube screamer for that kinda sound Edited August 8, 2010 by umph Quote
bobbass4k Posted August 8, 2010 Posted August 8, 2010 That's definitley not what I'd call the stoner bass sound, my idea of the stoner is sound is a Ric or P-Bass into a ridiculously loud all tube head with as many 8x10 cabs as you can afford. Ocassionaly with a big muff (green russian or civil war). That's the stoner fuzz pedal of choice. Quote
Finbar Posted August 8, 2010 Posted August 8, 2010 If anyone needs an idea of the Meshuggah bass sound by the way, check about a minute into this video. Real tight sounding. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JOR0hUIGb4Y Quote

I'd try and see if my line 6 pedal will do that sound, but it seems there are no bass amps in the House of Bass! WTF? Quote
