BottomEndian
That's usually my cue to sit up and take notice. A little investigation required I think.
"I'll give you twenty-one... twenty-one... twenty-one..." Ahhhhh. Love it. If you find that Tilt floats your boat, try The Drift. There's one track that involves someone punching a slab of meat while Scott screams something about Mussolini.
Conan
Giblin is one of my favourites! He played on Fish's debut solo album released in 1989. Highlights include: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1_4Nl_qFF8o http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l5avmXNE59U...feature=related Edited August 10, 2010 by Conan
crez5150
Back when I was handling Gallien Krueger, I was lucky enough to hang out with John when he had his pad (I say pad.... the grounds were mahooosive) in near Chessington. He is a fantastic guy to talk to, very grounded. At that time he was resident bassist at Realworld and Abbey Rd. I first got involved with him when he lost his GK Microbass combo off the back of his Harley rinding into town one day.... had to sort out a replacement for him quickly. Two things I vividly remember about him..... he composed a lot with an Akai MPC500... he really got the best out of it. Also he had this upright bass that had a head of a lion carved into the headstock..... bizarre looking thing. At that time I also introduced Tech Sound Systems (Tecamp nowadays) into the UK.... and John was fond of a little 1 x 12" combo ( he loves 12" speakers) and also a Tech Paracube combo.... I tried to get him to become an endorsee but he was really stuck on the GK Microbass.
yorks5stringer
that album was called "welcome to the cruise" and is..... just superb no musician credits on it though sadly. I've allways been aware of John Giblin, didnt he do that "lady in red" thing? (it wasnt Pino) I've never listened to him properly before today...pheww....anyboby want to buy my fretless stingray? I can't do it anymore, what a player!!
I stand corrected, he actually played a couple of tracks on Ritmo by JT
2pods
IIRC WTTC was Mo Foster, Roy Babbington, and the cream of the british session scene. There we go: Drums:Pete Van Hook/Simon Phillips/Barry De Souza Bass:Mo Foster/Roy Babbington Guitar:Ray Russell/Mike Paxman Keyboards:Chris Parren/Paul Hart Percussion:Morris Pert/John Punter/Mike Paxman Soprano Sax:Ray Warleigh String Arrangements:Paul Buckmaster Brass Arrangements:Ray Russell Tabla:Kesh Satche Orchestra leader:Gavin Wright/Richard Studt Piano notes:Steve Nye Great album. I took a lot from the bass playing on that, harmonics, fretless etc. Had my Aria TSB550N defretted because of it. Another £60 for Jimmy Moon Edited August 11, 2010 by 2pods
bassatnight
I thought John was probably the wrong choice for replacing Derek Forbes in Simple Minds during 1985 as his playing was a little more technical? Forbes was all about power and rolling Fender P bass lines John a little more subtle? Also Kate Bush can pick her bassists she also used Youth (Killingjoke) and Mick Karn
Sue
I saw him live numerous times with the Alan Parson's Live Project. He was a cool guy.

steverickwood
My thoughts exactly - he played some lush lines on 'family business', 'cliche' and all the tracks he played on actually:) Sweet tone, vibrato and feel.
markorbit
+1 on his work with Kate Bush. Really inventive stuff that works. Marvelous player. If I ever took up fretless I'd have a good listen to John Giblin.

barend
I think John Giblin is very underrated. There are no clips of his fretless playing on youtube that I know of. I would love to see it. Grace and Danger is my all time favourite 'fretless' album. Anyone know what John Giblin is doing lately? there is not much info on the internet about him. Did he play fretless on any albums for say the last ten years?
crez5150
I know he's been busy.... he played on some of the tracks on Kate Bush's last album 'Ariel' I believe he moved back up to scotland a few years back from Surrey. Last time I spoke with Mike at Iceni he had been in touch with him
RichardH
Giblin played on the Joan Armatrading UK tour last year, as I saw him/her/them at St Albans.

Sounds exactly like John Giblin on the Grace and Danger album. He even looks like him (although it is hard to see on that video). I think John Giblin is using a Wal fretless on that album? Did he also play that Wal on Babooshka and Breathing by Kate Bush? Still interested to find out what bass is used by Alan Thompson in that video. Sounds great!
