Giblin is one of my favourites! He played on Fish's debut solo album released in 1989. Highlights include:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l5avmXNE59U...feature=related
This album was my introduction to Mr Giblin's superb work. Some staggeringly good lines, but always within the context of the song - never overplaying, which given the melodic content of his lines, is no mean feat. Perfectly balanced basslines - just beautiful.

Great link. Big fan of John's from Brand X era.

Those basses in your avator look very like John's originals and very like the lined fretless I had in 1980 ish (flame sycamore if memory serves correctly)
Bringing back some great memories :)
Very Nice. !

oh, look, another familiar name on bass...at least, familiar to my mum. :)
Come on Steve. I recognise your name from MM era.

That was their best time IMHO so take credit where its due.

I bought the best of MM a couple of yrs ago and it has some great tracks on there.

Cheers

Dave,

The fretless is sycamore. The fretted is maple.

Love my Wals. I have fretless and fretted 5-string Mark IIIs also, and they are the Wals I play regularly. The Mark IIs in the photo have spent the last few years mostly in their cases. All have the Wal sound, but the ergpnomics differ greatly between the Mark IIs and Mark IIIs....of course the necks are the same shape, size and the string-spacing is the same.

I believe John Giblin moved from Wals to Zon for his fretless playing. I saw a more recent video of him in the studio playing a Zon. I've tried to find it again to post it here, but to no avail.

Does anyone know which basses John Giblin used for Babooshka and Breathing (on the Never for ever album from Kate Bush)?
And on the Grace and Danger album from John Martyn?

Are those his fretless Wal bass? and which Wal bass did he use? Just curious. I can't find any info on that.

Is that definitely JG? To my ears and eyes it just doesn't quite look like him or sound like him...

He is certainly a difficult guy to find info on!

Yes he did.
His fretless Zon is unusual (maybe unique) in that it has a real wood fingerboard rather than the usual Phenowood board.

He has pretty much zero presence on the internet, and in these days where every narcissistic dickhead feels the need to keep us up to date with their lives 24/7 & post pointless videos of themselves on Youtube I really admire him for that.

Spot on - MMEB - I'm not that old either :D
Sorry about that.

I actually looked the album out yesterday for another listen. From Blinded by the Light era onwards was best period.

Cheers

Not having heard a lot of John Martyn over the yrs this thread has really taken my interest.
Being a fan of Brand X i kinda lost touch where JG went until Simple Minds which didn't really show his talents to full potential IMO.

Can anyone recommend best album to combine John M and John Giblin.

Thanks
Dave

It's definitely John ,he's playing fretted there. He was also in the BBC documentary about John Martyn, when they are recording his album in Ireland. :)

Always loved JG's playing with Kate Bush, and also his work on Fish's first solo effort. I've dabbled very little with fretless but it's fair to say he's a significant influence.

Apropos of nothing, I have always assumed that Edinburgh punk nutters The Gin Goblins' name is a sort of tribute to the great man. :)

Jon.
