faceman
I'm on the look out for a hollowbody bass, relatively inexpensive that is along the classic lines of a Gibson EB-2 or Guild Starfire. I've been hoping to grab a DeArmond Starfire as it fits the bill perfectly but I have not yet seen any for sale on eBay, this forum or anywhere else. Any thoughts where to find one? Also any other suggestions? The Eastwood Classic 4 is another ideal option but they are £465 cheapest to buy in this country and they don't come around much for sale. The Epiphone Jack Casady is a little too expensive and doesn't have the neck pickup. I'm looking that thick chunky sound! Thoughts away folks
bigsmokebass
From what ive read, the Eastwood's arent so great as they appear but unfortunately i cant remember the forum/site i found that on. Gretsch maybe? Tried and tested the Epi Cassady, love it but medium scale, solid body your thing?

bozzbass
I thought about the Eastwood but finally went for a Hofner Club bass which is lovely. Strung with flatwounds it sounds great, kinda like a lot of the bass sounds on those Gnarls Barkley records.

faceman
I've heard nothing but good things about the Eastwood - Ed thinks it is great here and even owns one himself - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MmSUjhcJaPo and AndyTheBassBison loves his http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=68710 I wasn't a fan of the Ibanez Artcore, the body is too deep for my liking. I'm debating a Hofner Contemporay Club, espcially if I can get one second hand! This Epiphone Rivoli would have been ideal but out of the price range - http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vie...em=270620499798 The search continues! dannybuoy
Not strictly a neck pickup, more on the middle, but the Epiphone Jack Casady is a great bass, and the varitone switch can be used to get a real thumpy sound approximating a pickup closer to the neck. They're about £470 new on Thomann.
faceman
This is very convincing. It's got that hollow-feel as well as a lot of meat to it! Any one else got an examples of this bass live or recordings. How does it cut through?
Ian Savage
There's the Tanglewood TEB-12 which has a big fat neck 'bucker and a mini-humbucker in the bridge, short-scale though...and apparently now quite rare from a quick Google! I've got one that's utterly shagged through years of gigging, there's one on Gumtree posted a couple of months ago...
krispn
That TEB12 was mine and I'd done lots of work on it - Model One neck p/u, complete re-wiring, new CTS knobs, switch craft input jack - the works really! It was a nice wee bass before I got to it but it is, in my humble opinion, quite the hollow body monster now. It is now residing in Fife but Im not sure the new owner would entertain some offers but you never know. If you do get to try one, a TEB, then do as they are great fun, and nearly play themselves! nick
If you fancy a proper vintage hollowbody, relatively inexpensive & that's not deep bodied .... Have you considered an Epiphone EA-260 / 5120? Alternatively, you could try looking out for an Aria 5120 or Univox,Conrad models that are believed to have come from the same factory. I picked up this late 60's Commodore a while back dirt cheap. Has a bridge dampener (need to put it back on) & ridiculously powerful 15k single coil pickup . After a bit of a set-up & some frets dressed, plays lovely & a has great tone with flats; plenty of thump, but can nail that Gnarls Barkley sound too. The only bad thing about it, is the crap tuners which I intend to change one day. They crop up on Ebay fairly frequently, worth trying IMO if you find a good one. faceman
I've just seen an Epiphone EA-260 go for £200 on eBay which seems a steal. What can you tell me about them? A 70s version of the Gibson hollow?

Not really a version of anything Gibson. They were a budget model at the time with bolt-on shortscale neck & totally hollow maple laminate body. Epiphone EA-260 catalogue It's similar in construction to my Commodore, no doubt same factory...which is easy to play, lightweight, good tone, fun to dig into. faceman
The Italia Rimini Bass looks very very nice, along the lines of the Rickenbacker 4005. How is the build quality on these things? Found it for £399 new, which must mean they knock around the £300 mark second hand...
