Bilbo
Active every time. More control over tone.
J3ster
Agreed Go Active, you get a more responsive tone when bending notes with a fretless. Do switch to passive from time to time too though the tone change does work well with certain sounds and pedals too.
Shaggy
Squier Jazz fretless really nice, and you could add a J-retro and upgrade the p/u’s later. Mind you, if I was looking for a fretless with that budget there are two absolute crackers in the For Sale section right now – Rich’s Jaydee Roadie and Bassballs’s Warwick Fortress – both active, both luverlee!
