One-off prototype Rickenbacker

This is apparently a one-off, brand - new 4003 with an "experimental" factory finish, being sold through RIC's Ebay outlet:

If that was a production bass, I'd sell my JapCrap & buy one. No question.

Jon.

there's a rather tasty looking one-off g**tar up there from them as well

OK, I love Ric's, I have two vintage Ric's. I play them, lots.

But I don't get this. It's nice enough, as 4003's go, but what's so special about it. The checker binding? So buy a real vintage Ric with checker binding.

For that sort of money you could get a genuine early-70's Ric in seriously good condition.

Clearly I'm missing something. Please enlighten me.

I guess because it's both a unique one-off (both colour and binding) and it's an official Ric product rather than a 3rd party refinish, that's enough to bump it's price over and above an off the shelf 4003.

I love it and can understand (ah, if only I could afford...) the price it'll go for in that sense.

More bemusing to me is the 'beaten-up-fresh-from-the-factory" artist endorsed models that Fender and Gibson charge hu-u-u-ge sums for. The one's I've seen up close looked fake (in particular, Rory Gallaghers Strat) in terms of the wear and tear.

My capitalist right-brain says somethings only worth what someone's prepared to pay for it. My socialist left-brain says that skews things towards people with too much wealth. Both halves then have a whirling-dervish catfight about it. Explains why I get dizzy when I think too much.

For me it's because I've always said that if RIC did a reissue of the old late 60s/early 70s 4001 - checked binding, full-width inlays, toaster, skunk stripe, the works - then I'd buy one. This is the closest thing, in terms of the overall look, to have come out of the factory since 1973. That & the fact it's a one-off & completely unique, they have no plans to introduce this as a colour/trim option. That means that whatever someone ends up paying for it, it'll be massively collectable & probably appreciate in value.

Funny things, Ricks.

J.
