Stu-khag
hey peeps, what's peoples thoughts on this? I've always wanted a bass vi but alas they are way out of my budget. I'm quite tempted by it http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Danelectro-Custom-6-...ents_Guitars_CV

Plus they seem to get a lot of great reviews.

henry norton
I've 'acquired' an old Strat copy that I'm in the process of building a 30" scale, six string bass neck for. I'll post up a build diary once I get going and if it works well I might make a few more if anyone's interested. I couldn't believe how much Bass VIs are going for these days, even the Fender Japan versions are fetching mega-bucks. Here's a link to a big list of short scale 6 strings: Bass VIs MusicMan make a six string Bass Silhouette too although I've never seen one in the flesh. Might be fine though - if you get one, tell us what it's like... Cheers, B.

Here's to Mr Henry Norton with his build, maybe I can pass some money his way for one!
absolutpepper
Fender Japan Jaguar Bottom Master ???? unfortunate name or what ?
The bottom master and sub-sonic strats are baritones but they are 27" scale so they wont really do E-E tuning a la Bass VI. I like em and would probably tune one to A-A but they are a different beast so to speak. CP
absolutpepper
Depending on budget I reckon the best thing to do is buy a Fender Jazzmaster then get the Warmoth Strat conversion neck (its a direct swap). It'll be the closest to a Bass VI and still unique. Going to to make a point of doing this some time. Just need to find a bargain basement Jazzmaster with a broken neck! dlloyd
I had an OLP Bass VI type thing at one point, but sold it on as I couldn't use it in the band I was in and it was just sitting around. It's an odd instrument... neither a bass nor a guitar. Best place I found for it was playing along with a regular bass and a guitar.
Colledge
i dont really see how thats been modified for a bass, you can get the baritone version cheaper: here and as far as i can see... its just a case of re-stringing with bass vi strings, maybe have to modify the nut. Cat Burrito
The Danos are always really good fun but I must confess they never seem to have much staying power & wind up getting sold on quickly (not just my experience but friends too). dannybuoy
The Gretsch Jet Baritone is worth a look too, although more expensive than the Dano. I bet the Dano would sound a lot twangier with it's single coils though. Edited August 23, 2010 by dannybuoy
geoffbyrne
Watch out when modifying the baritone - note the Argile Argus ad where it says 'designed to intonate with....'. I have a Yamaha Drop 6: It's designed to use 11-62s, I have 12 - 72s on it and the bottom B doesn't *quite* intonate, the bridge running out of travel just before perfection, but it's near enough. Just a thought. And I could be pursuaded to part with the Yamaha. G.
