Yeah, I went to watch Michael Manring once and he let me try his out. I'm ashamed to say I can hardly remember what is sounded like, but it felt amazing... I dont even play fretless... I'm not sure I'd pay so much for one though! Do you know how much they are exactly?

I looked at getting one when I was looking for someone to make me my "ultimate fretless bass".

However I decided that I wasn't ready to order a custom bass from outside the UK yet...

Also be aware that you don't get all the bells and whistles that Mr Manring does.

I think MM is coming over for some clinic work this autumn - well worth watching out for :)

Yeah, the Hyperbass available to the public is a pretty different beast. No transducers built into the body, no detunable bridge (it was available on a handful of instruments a while back, but apparently the guy who custom-made the bridges refused to make any more because they were an absolute nightmare to make) and the Xtenders at the headstock are an extra-cost option.

In the grand scheme of things, the production-model Hyperbass is just a slightly odd-looking 4-string fretless with a 3-octave fingerboard and an astonishing price tag. Not saying it's not worth it (I'm sure it's extremely well made, and I rather like the way it looks), but it's just a wooden-bodied, graphite-necked bass... starting at US$6770. Options can take it up to around US$9000.

They look amazing. Even without the bells and whistles, I think the bog standard Hyperbass with 4 hipshots attached is a frightening thing to imagine mastering. I expect it is an absolutely incredible instrument, if I were willing to pay that much for a new bass I'd buy one!

I would love to see pictures of that!:)

I met Michael while attending ACM and the bass completely blew me away! Didn't have the bottle to ask for a go right enough! He's a great guy!
No, but the single pickup and it's position is definately more suited to a piccolo setup. Plus the tuners drop beyond a 5th so you can really utilize the range of piccolo strings, I use D'Addario's.
I have a set of piccolo D'addario's on my Status fretless at the moment and I'm loving it. Only 2 octaves and 1 D-tuner peg, but lovely to play all the same!

That's *ouch* expensive. Bit who else does a 3 octave fretless (probably lots of people?).

It maybe a niche instrument, but it does look amazing!!

Just trawling the forum and spotted this old thread and your playing Danny, something else....reason for posting is...I have just enquired about a hyperbass direct from Zon, nothing special just a straightforward no xtenders altered tuning jobby just 'bog' standard. The bass looks amazing, I have had it priced in Black, solid black, no fancy wood, just black. Not sure if I will do it 7 month lead and 50% up front on a $6,000 bass.......something will have to go..... My knackers if Mrs Blondie ever found out. This could be a dream as I don't do fancy bass...

If you haven't already you might want to read GremlinAndys posts on waiting for his Hyperbass to be delivered in the Zons GearPorn thread:

Not trying to put you off or anything - I have two Zons & I think they're the best basses money can buy.

Thanks Rhys, didn't realise it was Piccolo, I like the look of it, I'll ask if it can be normalised. I don't do "Solo" I just do bass, and sing, maybe I don't need that level of pose.......
